G3 iBook Memory

I decided to scrap my Rev. A iMac and go for a iBook (Firewire) but the thing is when I get the iBook I want to upgrade three things the hard drive, memory, and OS. I looked on Everymac.com and it said "Apple officially reports that the maximum memory capacity of this system is 320 MB with 64 MB of onboard memory. However, third-parties have been able to upgrade the RAM to 576 MB with a single 512 MB memory module." So I'm asking how many Ram slots are there from what I understand Is there two ?

you are right

there is one RAM slot, and it would be 512MB+64MB = 576MB. It is PC-100 High-Density Low Profile (i think). However, be prepared to pay an arm and a leg for it. PC-100/133 ram isn't cheap. Especially on eBay.

Thanks But I didn't ask really what I wanted.

My main question is if I were to put a 512 Mb chip in a clamshell iBook would it kill it or make it not power up ? Or will it be sucessful and run normally.

it depends

macs can be picky with memory. I have a 256MB module that works in my blue and white but doesn't work in my mom's iMac DV 400Mhz. You might have to see if you can track down a mac-oriented module. it will be more expensive. but you will know it works right Smile

Try on this site. someone is bound to have a module they can give up for a fair price.

I got a 512MB module for my 6

I got a 512MB module for my 600MHz iBook years ago for around $100. They still go for about that, unless you happen to find someone selling one used. Macs can be picky on RAM, as Coius mentioned, but I've had pretty good lucky by using name brand modules with name-brand chips on them.

I have that same iBook, but I

I have that same iBook, but I put in a 256 stick so I have the total of 320mb. In my opinion, the thing is so slow you're not going to run more than maybe 2 things at a time anyway, so 320mb really isn't all that bad. No amout of RAM is going to make up for an extremely weak processor. Depending on the difference in price between a 256 stick and 512, I would just take the extra money and buy a faster iBook. If you really REALLY have your heart set on a firewire clamshell, I would VERY highly reccomend the 466MHz models over the 366. My 366 is a dog and I wish I had that extra 100MHz. However, I really reccomend against the clamshell. The look pretty and all, but the 800x600 12" screen is so terrible it makes me want to slash my wrists sometimes. You have to sidescroll EVERYTHING. I've had mine for 4 years now and it has caused me no end of grief. Just my thoughts though.

Well I understand the whole iBook Ram thing but I did finally decide to move up to a Dual USB iBook.
