Mac OS 9

I've been looking around and think I kind of Miss Mac OS 9 it was about the best version of the Classic OS. After reading a few articles at Low end Mac the original OS is just fading and fading and it's somewhat sad. In ways apple is moving away from it's roots PowerPC and Mac (Not UNIX) and so fourth. Too bad that they didn't continue an Alternate Version Of Classic with an Altered Kernel and other lacking features. But the sun is setting on OS 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8, and the unforgetable 9.

just needs a browser

If someone would simply make an OS9 browser capable of handling today's internet, there'd be happy people and happy old Macs all over the world and OS 9 might be as prevalent as X--worldwide, that is. Maybe Apple is paying off the designers at iCab to keep them from doing that, or is it a lot more complicated than that? Why is it that no one has come up with that browser?

Well...

Be specific... what sort of features would it need to have?

WamCom

WamCom has handled everything I've been able to throw at it, though it's now three years old. I had to install it on a few production machines at work (Sawtooth G4s, OS 9.1) since the sites we had to access as part of our job no longer worked with IE or Communicator.

It's not just the browser that's needed, though, for 'today's internet'. You'd need modern OS 9 versions of video codecs, java, and all those other plug-ins that are part of the experience.

I don't know if I'd consider PowerPC as part of Apple's roots, since the exact same 'going to miss the old days' discussions were taking place when Apple moved away from 68K.

I do prefer the classic UI over OS X, and find it faster, easier to navigate (and there's always Greg's Buttons for those that like the panel view) and generally a more pleasant user experience. I do miss being able to go into the System folder and know what every file did, and insert and remove extensions, etc. as required.

But I don't miss the crashes taking down the entire system, and I really appreciate the superior multi-tasking. I don't miss the whole system grinding to a halt because I'm holding down the mouse button to select and drag a group of files.

Well the Lacking..

The Lacking features like Protected Memory, and Pre-Emtive Multitasking and you're right about the browser thing. I also don't miss the crashing and system problems but I also liked knowing what everything did in the System folder but one thing that I don't miss is the extensions (I had a lot of trouble with them).
