powerbook battery failure?

I have a 1Ghz G4 titanium powerbook with the following symptoms: the battery does not charge at all, stays at 0%. When the powercord is disconnected, the machine IMMEDIATELY turns off. It restarts with difficulty, sometimes at first making a high pitched noise, but if you wait a bit it does restart. The date and time are reset (to 1969). Any idea what the problem is? PRAM battery, removable battery, or something else?

try resetting the Power Manager

linky

You could also try ye olde openfirmware reset

hold O-F-CMD-OPT at startup-
at prompt, type (but not the quotes of course)

'reset-nvram'
return
'reset-all'
return

'Book will restart

Frankly however, it sounds like your main battery's gone tits up, probably time for a new one.

thanks

Well, not the main battery, since I have a spare and it is the same.

BUT I read that one could reset the PMU using the button under the keyboard and I did that and now the battery has charged ... but I have not turned the machine on yet.

In your instructions you do NOT mention the middle line (which I also found, but have not tried). What will all this do?

reset-nvram (enter)
set-defaults (enter)
reset-all (enter)

Thanks again,

set-defaults

Well, that does 'work' on your Mac, but I'm not sure what it does beyond what the other two commands do. I've never used it except on older Macs (pre-New_World) that don't support the reset-nvram command. Heck, try it and see, can't hurt anything after all.
