PM 8500 hangs on boot up (sometimes)

PM 8500 showing 448MB RAM in ASP has 9.2.2 via Old Wolrd Support v. 1.01 and with a Sonnet Cressendo G3 500MHz upgrade card sometimes hangs on boot up before second extensionss loads.

Everything goes fine until the first extension loads up - looks like the icon for Open Transport (which is v. 2.7.9). The next extension seen to load on the screen is the Sonnet Processor Upgrade (v. 2.0.2). If the system is going to hang it will do it between these two icons being displayed on the screen during boot up. When it hangs, it just freezes (mouse included). I am booting with the 9.2.2 Base extension set plus the Sonnet extension.

The only flaky behavior is the boot up, which makes unattended boot up unreliable for me.

This is unrelated to my other post about the Yamaha CD RW as I unplugged it until I resolve this issue.

TIA for any insight!

I'd try starting it up withou

I'd try starting it up without the Sonnet upgrade extension--move it out of the extensions folder--see if it boots ok without the extension, and then put the extension back. If it recurs, move the Sonnet extension up to first place by putting a space before it's name. Before the hang, do you get the Mac OS window that says Old World support in the corner? Have you removed the L2 cache card? Have you checked OS9 Helper's site for known issues? I think there may have been problems with 9.2.2. There isn't a whole lot of reason to move from 9.2.1 to 9.2.2 in old world macs, IIRC. I always kept my 9600 at 9.2.1. with no issues.

The Sonnet extension already

The Sonnet extension already has a couple of spaces before it's name.

Before the hang, I do see the Mac OS window with "Old World Support"

I do not know anything about any L2 cache card.

I was trying to downgrade to 9.2.1 at one point, but never had the time to follow thru on it sine I need to reinstall the OS and then re-Doug everything.

Open Transport always loads f

Open Transport always loads first. You can't make the Sonnet extension load before it.

Version 2.0.2 sounds very old for the Sonnet extension. The last I checked, it was up at 2.3.xomething or higher. Updating to the latest version would the the first thing I would try.

Peace,
Drew

latest version

Here you go:

Crescendo/Encore Processor Upgrade Software version 3.1

Yep, version 2.0.2 is probably much older than OS 9.2.

The 8500's all came with processor L2 cache cards attached to the motherboard (Cache DIMM):

Might as well take it off since it's not needed. The Sonnet daughter card should have its own faster dedicated L2 cache. The Sonnet extension disables the Cache DIMM, but why tempt confusion?

Of course, it's been a long time since I worked on an 8500 and it's now coming back to my memory what a pain in the a** it is to get to the motherboard and that DIMM.
