Xbox IR Remote and the Macintosh?

I was wondering if its actually possible to use the IR reciever from an XBOX and hack it to work on a non -IR mac via USB? or how about the remote control being used with a 5xxx or 6xxx becasue they have built in IR

well...

the ports on the front of an XBox are USB ports. Oddly shaped, but USB ports none the less. So, if you crack the IR receiver open and solder on a USB cable, then it would only be a question of software. You would need some drivers and software to interpret the input from the receiver.

What are you trying to accomplish, tho?

The IR modules in the old Pow

The IR modules in the old Power Macs was made by Sony, and some have found that random Sony TV or receiver remotes work in lieu of the Apple remote. That said, unless the Xbox remote is programmable, it's unlikely to work.

I pretty much wanted to use i

I pretty much wanted to use it as a normal remote but with buttons controlling different applications and yeah. I haven't tried soldering the cable on, but i've taken the crazy USB port from the xbox and spliced an USB cable to it and it doesn't seem to work even on a windows system. I saw these drivers for os x somewhere and installed it but the device isn't detected.

instead of hacking the IR con

instead of hacking the IR connector you could try one of these first.

Gamemon universal GC/XB/PS2 USB converter hub

i bought one of these from walmart for like $10, i use it with my logitech wireless Xbox controller to play games with on my DA G4. of corse you have to download the xbox HID controller driver before you can use a xbox controller on the Mac, PS2 seems to have support built in OS X.

but this should allow you to connect the xbox DVD eye to the Mac with no modding it.

here is the Xbox HID driver for OS X it seems it will allow you to use the Xbox gamepad, DVD remote, and other Xbox devices on Mac OS X

I used to use a small Zenith

I used to use a small Zenith programmable remote set for Sony on a 5260. It worked enough to control the TV tuner/volume and power.
