What Eprom Burner for the PC do you guys recomend?

What EPROM Burner do you guys recomend for the PC? One that can handle the old 2716 & 2732 EPROMS? And ofcourse handle all the new stuff? One that has a nice and easy software package , that can be used on Windows XP? And ofcourse , if possible , be able to connect to a PC via USB 2.0?

Thanks again!

Patrick.

Willem

I've got one of the Willem programmers, and it's been pretty simple to use. Never used a programmer before, so if a complete newb can figure it out...

They're plentiful on ebay, and the first one I just checked was listed as compatible with the 27(c)16 and 27(c)32. Just go over the specs, since there are a lot of variations of the board for sale with different sockets installed by default (I had to build an adapter for mine for pic programming)

I've used mine for programming pics, as well as a few 27256 Atari TOS eproms.

more info...

eeun... thanks for the info , what I am looking for is something that will let you connect with a USB 2.0 connection , is easy and straight forward , will let me burn old 2716 and 2732 eproms and newer ones ofcourse , and the software that will let me stack images if needed , example , for making a dual boot eprom , a 2732 , and ofcourse normal eproms. Also , the ability to read an eprom and save what you have just read.

thanks...

Patrick.

Just loaded up my burning sof

Just loaded up my burning software, and it does list the 2716 and 2732.

As to the rest...no proballo. Mine's hooked up to a USB 2.0 port on my PC, and I've successfully stacked a dual-boot TOS rom. Test writes, erasing eeproms, read/write and save read roms to disk...yep.

I also bought a cheap UV eprom eraser, which is handy when salvaging used eproms, and the occasional trial and error mistakes.

Got a make and model # of the burner?

Thanks! Do you have a make and model of the burner? I can try and do a ebay search. I have an eprom eraser , but it pretty much sux , need to get a better one , one that is capable of erasing up to 5 or more , and I think it usually takes about a good hour of intense UV light to erase the ones I have.

Thanks.

Patrick.

Enhanced Universal Willem EPR

Enhanced Universal Willem EPROM Programmer

Link to the version I have.

Link to buy-it-now listings for variations of the programmer, ranked by lowest price first.

There's no specific model number for any of these.
Check the compatibility lists in the auction text. Note that adapter boards are required for different chips depending on the built-in sockets. I searched until I found a layout that had a good balance of built-in compatibility for what I expected to be programming vs. cost.

There is a new version of the

There is a new version of the Willem that communicates via USB. Older versions just use USB or wall wart for power, but still require a parallel port for communications. Don't confuse the two. I don't know why you are looking at burning EPROMS, but I found that if you need to burn an entire bank of 6 for an Apple II, the cost adds up fast. For this reason, when I designed my own Firmware card for the Apple II, I used 27c256 or 27C128 parts. These parts can be found for less than $2.00 each and one is all you need.

How about this eprom burner?

thanks again for the reply! so is this a good eprom burner? :

hopefully it will be able to let me burn 2716 and 2732 eproms , and ofcourse let me pop in eproms , read them and save them to a file? and the ability to stack the images also. if it is as easy as my chipmax , then this would be an awsome one , and hopefully it won't cost me an arm and a leg to get it here from overseas.

thanks.

Been almost a year since I used mine, and forgot the USB was just for power. Sorry 'bout that, Patrick!

Nice, but also expensive. Is USB connectivity a convenience or necessity for you? It does raise the price.
If that's the one you want, then go for it, and I doubt you'll be disappointed. I'm cheap, and since I figured I'd probably not use mine more than a dozen times, bought the cheapest one that met my needs.

Hmm

Well the only reason why I am looking for a USB connectivty , is because I have a Laptop , and no LPT port , don't really wish to try and hunt down a docking station that supports my HP Laptop , found out in the past that they are a waste of money , and that pretty much everything out there now a days is USB connected :O)

Thanks.

A USB to serial adaptor can b

A USB to serial adaptor can be found for less than $25.00. You may find occasional uses for one, especially if you are interested in old computers.

Got the burner!

Well I got the burner , and hooked it up , popped in a AM2716B eprom , loaded a file that I snarfed with CiderPress from a binary file that I got from my eprom files collection on the II. I loaded in into buffer and selected my device type. I did a blank check and it said all was good , then it started saying I need an external power source. OK.. no problem , I found one and plugged it in, that took care of that problem. NOW when ever I go to burn , I get this message:

Write Failed, Address= 0x000000, Buffer=0X4A, Device= 0x0F

does this mean I have a bunk eprom? can't fine any option to clear out buffer with this burner , so I was hopeing that was a better software package that I could use , OR possibly I am doing something wrong , if you can please get back to me.

Thanks.

Patrick.

Could be a number of things..

Could be a number of things...and not something I've encountered before.

Silly question, but have you got all the jumpers set correctly? I'll admit my first time out I misinterpreted the software diagram and set my jumpers to the exact opposite of how they should have been.

Found a couple other tidbits:

Similarly, you need to know what the appropriate programming pulse width is. 2716 and 2732 EPROMs are specified to be programmed at VCC=5V, providing you program with a 50mS pulse. The program can do this for 2716, but not 2732 (longest pulse is 25mS). But 50mS isn't the default pulse width for 2716; so you can't assume that the program is correct. This is one of my complaints with the software; no one who's talking knows what it's doing and no one has source for the recent versions...

When you get a new voltmeter, enter the Test H/W tab and set switches/jumpers as indicated in that screen. If more than one of the LEDs are lit, do the simple hardware test in the Help menu. This will get the program and programmer in synch. Then, with no device in the ZIF socket, click on the VPP pin and measure the voltage on pin1. It should be whatever you set VPP to. Do the same for VCC. If those voltages are correct. you should be able to program if the rest of the logic is working.

What are you using as a power source? If you're using a really crappy wall-wart it might cause problems.

actually , this new version

actually , this new version of programmer , is jumperless , it is the new TRUE USB PROGRAMMER , by Willem. kinda weird , but possibly the eproms are bad. Even though the Eprom Prorammer says it does not require any external power , this is not true , if you Laptop or Tower is using alot of USB power , especially going through an add-on USB PORT , this presents a problem , so I can see how you would need an external power pack , which it says from time to time to add External Power.

Anyhow , I will try again to get it to run...

But getting back to Apple eprom burner cards , I have one here that does a good job , from what I can tell.. But the only thing is I can't remember exactly on what location in memory to enter when it asks ? I tried one the other night , by BLOADING a Binary file into memory , A$,4000 when you get into the burner it asks for a starting address: not sure if it is 4000 , or would it be 800? and I have set the dip switches according to what type of eprom you trying to burn.

Thanks.

Patrick.
