I've owned a Mac since the OS 7.x times, but just don't remember how these things worked. Now I've got a IIvx supporting a audio mixing console from the 90's. Got to stay OS 7.61. Trying to get one of my old drives (can't believe I kept them all...), preferrably my magneto optical (also have a Syquest and a ZIP) to work as back up unit for the VX. Haven't been able to get them to work yet. I think I've got the SCSI ID and termination right, but they still don't show up on the desktop. Also tried Norton Utilities, but the drives don't show up there either. Grateful for any tip or direction to another thread.

SCSI 0 and 1 are reserved for the mac. Make sure all external drives have different numbers, starting at 2. Is the chain terminated at the end with a SCSI terminator?
Wow, thanks for fast reply! Yep, those things I do remember so I got the IDs and termination right. Though the disks are not formatted, but I hoped that they'd show up as unformatted and with an option to initialize.
If they're not formatted, they won't show up on the desktop.
Have you tried using the Drive Setup application? Should be in the utilities folder in 7.6.1...possibly on the install CD if it wasn't installed by default.
Also can't remember how Apple's software deals with removable and m/o drives...might need a third party solution.

Thx again! Tried to start the Drive setup, but got the message that it wasn't possible to run on my computer (IIvx with 20Mb memory) That seemed strange. But I just downloaded ScsiProbe so tomorrow I'll see if that app can see the disk, then try to work it out from there.
I don't think the removable thing will be a problem since I'll only turn it on now and then to do back up of files on the internal HD.
Heh, you're wrong -- so here's your correction
:
SCSI IDs 0 and 7 are reserved for system use. ID 0 is for the SCSI controller, 7 is for the system itself.
Thanks again for the tips so far! I got the SCSIprobe working and it showed both my Apple CD drive and my M/O drive. Apple drive setup would not see the MO though, but Lido 7.56 did! However after a few failing attempts to format a disk from Lido I changed to my Syquest instead. Now formatting and backing up my data worked just fine! So it seems my MO drive has left for computer heaven. Any comments on that Lido app? Or anything else that comes to mind?
