ADTpro and Apple Super Serial Card

Hi, not particularly a problem just wondering if anybody else has this. I am running the ADTpro bootstrapping process with my IIe and super serial card, now the ADTpro page says that the SSC should show a prompt "APPLE SSC:" after hitting crtl-a, mind doesn't nothing happens but if i press return and syntax error doesn't attack me then all is good and everything sends. Just wondering if anybody else doesn't see the APPLE SSC prompt?

You should see the "APPLE SSC:" prompt. If you don't, something is wrong, assuming it is really a card from Apple Computer. There are lots of clones, and they sometimes respond differently. But you should get a response. Do check that the DIP switches are set as listed on the ADTPro serial configuration page.

Take a look at the bootstrapping video to see exactly how the screen should look before, during, and after the transfer. (Start at about 1:20.) If it's not looking exactly like that, something's going wrong - probably back at the Ctrl-A stage.

Ok. A couple of possibilities here, but the most likely one is your cable, if it's a null modem. Which do you have? Straight through, or null?

Next - make sure all speed settings on host and Apple IIe match. The bootstrapping happens at 9600, but all other communications should be at 115.2kbps. Don't bother making it slower; it won't help or work. It will work at 115.2, or it won't work at all.

Finally - any chance ADTPro has chosen the wrong slot for your SSC? Check on the CONFI(G) screen and make sure that choice matches where your SSC really is.

Re: ADTpro and Apple Super Serial Card

i have a USB to Serial DB 9 Pin RS232 Cable+ 25 Parallel Adapter http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=310291328409&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT#ht_2771wt_1114

i believe that makes it straight through, I have just installed the latest Prolific drivers for OS 10.6 and am bootstrapping again now after restarting the mac, will then attempt a transfer again making sure of all the settings first.

Re: ADTpro and Apple Super Serial Card

looks it is a cable problem, the SSC is set up as per instructions, as is ADTpro on the mac, the config is all correct, bootstrapping works fine, but cannot use the send, receive or dir options. ill have to find a better cable that isn't gonna cost me 50USD like the cable and adapter (and shipping to UK) from retrofloppy.

The Prolific chipset is not my favorite (especially on the Mac), but they do work after a fashion. You will need a cable wired as described on the ADTPro website, depending on which direction your jumper block is pointing.

International shipping is a killer, but being certain it will work in the end is a benefit. But you really should only need a straight-through serial cable (DB25M to DE9F), and you should be able to source that locally for cheap. Just make sure your jumper block is pointing down, towards "Terminal" once you get it plugged in.

Re: ADTpro and Apple Super Serial Card

would also need a DE9F to USB 2.0 adapter. using a blackbook, i could maybe seek out a cheap straight through and try using my ubuntu dell box. either that or keep an eye on ebay for a cheap copy of Applewriter or Appleworks, the main use for this apple is/was going to be for writing my dissertation and other essays (I struggle to keep motivated using my macbook, too much distraction).

You're (probably) going to miss editing with a mouse. I'd recommend Multiscribe, which uses very nice double-hires graphics to give a GUI, and has mouse support (thought it will work from just a keyboard too).

Re: ADTpro and Apple Super Serial Card

tbh, i barely use the trackpad on my mac, and anyway i had planned to write the early drafts on the apple for distraction free writing, then doing all necessary editing on my mac, but without a cable that will allow for ADTpro to work its all moot.

If you enjoy pain, you could always try the audio connection.

Re: ADTpro and Apple Super Serial Card

That will most definatly be the very last resort, ive seen the youtube videos and read the forum posts that convey the deep pain that it causes. Luckily my ubuntu Dell box, has a 25pin connector on the back, and i dug out an old, but unused 25pin cable that i presume came packaged with a very old printer, will try that out in a few days.

There are those for which Audio works the first time, and every time... and then there are the rest. Good luck with your serial cable!

Re: ADTpro and Apple Super Serial Card

no luck with the serial cable and ubuntu, so i just ordered the cable and adapter from retrofloppy, better to have kit that is known to work.

Re: ADTpro and Apple Super Serial Card

great news serial cable and usb adapters from retrofloppy arrived today, even more good news ADTpro disk transfered correctly to a floppy, bad news trying to copy first of two appleworks disks fails every time usually with "image transfer aborted" on the mac adtpro app side. im guessing my wiggly usb ports might be to blame.

just successfully transferred applewriter disk and started from it :D. does anybody know of a version of AppleWorks that runs on a standard apple IIe? i successfully transferred the first disk of a pair of appleworks disks but when started it complains of needing 128k.
