Apple IIc Memory problem

The problem is when I run AppleWorks some strange characters appear in the middle of the screen. After reading around here, I did the self test pushing both apple keys at startup.
The tests run and after it tells me "*RAM 00000001" or "*RAM 00000011". Doesn't means the first memory chip is damaged? Also, some games do not run.
How can I fix this? any suggestion please?

Javster,

Does this only happen when you are running AppleWorks?

Also, have you tried going into the Monitor Mode to see if the garbage shows up on the screen?

I only have seen it on AppleWorks, it shows some "!" in the middle of the screen, and an "@" on the bottom.
Alsop noticed that some games, like Evolution, which works on my other IIc, gets stuck on demo.
Thanks

Re: Apple IIc Memory problem

I don't want this to seem kinda dumb, but do you think the heads on your disk drive may need cleaning?
I checked on the possible replacement of RAM chips for the IIc motherboard in my SAMs Computerfacts. They are soldered in. I'm not sure how feasable it is to try to remove and replace them though. If I were going to go though all that trouble, I'd pull the chips and then replace them with sockets, so you could pull the RAM out and replace individule chips anytime you wanted.

Anyone else have suggestion? Smile

Thanks, the drive works as some programs load, but other not. I wonder if there's a way to test the hardware, like a program. I have another IIc, older, but at least runs fine. Any suggestions?
