ADT-PRO Problems on Apple IIGS

Hi,
Seem to be having some problems using ADT-PTO on my apple IIGs. When trying to send PRODOS to the Apple IIGS to start the setup I get the following garble?? It worked before. Only thing I did was update my OSX to 10.8.3. I've updated the latex USBtoserial drivers for my device which is supported under 10.8.3 but no luck. Any ideas why Its not working now? Check image for details.

Did you also do Ctrl-A 14B after the IN#2? Is bootstrapping speed set to 9600 baud? (I'm seriously considering removing the ability to change it...)

Re: ADT-PRO Problems on Apple IIGS

Sorry for the late reply. I've been flat out. Speed is at 9600. Strange thing is it worked a few months back and now it doesn't.

If I don't plug in my serial cable it does the same thing when I type IN#2. (see screenshot) I've got the bios settings all as default. Is there a way I can test my serial connection on my Apple IIgs with my MAC? Some software?

Thanks,
Rob

Re: ADT-PRO Problems on Apple IIGS

I am thinking that the problem might be the cable.

The pinout listed on this website:

http://adtpro.sourceforge.net/connectionsserial.html

Did not work at all for me.

However, I did find a cable pinout on another website that did work fine for me.

Re: ADT-PRO Problems on Apple IIGS

I'm using the same cable that worked before. The only thing I've changed is the onboard battery. I purchased a little kit that allows you to use AA batteries instead of the onboard old school soldiered battery.

I'm going to try disconnecting the battery pack to see if its causing some sort or error with the motherboard. The strange thing is i get the garbage even if I don't plug in the cable. As soon as I run IN#2 it returns garbage. (See above screenshot).

Is there an Apple IIGS specific diagnostics disk? I've seen loads for Apple II but not sure if they will work 100% on the Apple IIGS? It would be good to test my hardware to see if I have any faulty chips.

Re: ADT-PRO Problems on Apple IIGS

I have all batteries on all of my iigs computers disconnected. Only default values are said to work. And yes, there is a iigs diagnostics disk I have laying around. Don't know which image I used to make it. I did no bootstrapping on my iigs. I did it on my iie. Maybe it works better on my iie. For me, on my iie, it worked the first time and nothing went wrong.

I guess it goes without saying that your cable isn't the cause any more. You might experiment with the printer port by setting it up as a modem port in the control panel and doing an IN#1 to see how that behaves. You could take the first step or two with bootstrapping over the printer port, but ADTPro will immediately try to use port #2 once it gets control.

What kind of iigs configuration are we talking about here? Is it a rom 01 or rom 03? Does it have any peripheral cards installed? Any additional memory cards installed? Maybe removing all cards will help.

It's a ROM1. I've removed all cards and even removed the battery pack I installed. Still the same. Very strange. Maybe something has died on the motherboard. hmmmm...

Or the power supply. I have an apple iigs power supply but it's voltages are way too low. Anyway, I would try a bootstrapping procedure on one of my rom 01 gs'es but I have a huge apple ii restoration project and will not be able to do this until it's done.

It works. And it worked for him before. There's something wrong in the serial connection somewhere. It could be any of:
  • There's something wrong with the serial port on the GS
  • There's something wrong or different about the serial cable between the GS and the Mac
  • There's something wrong or different about the USB serial adapter or driver
  • There's something wrong with the setting of the baud rate on either the GS or the Mac.

Those are the variables I can see.

Re: ADT-PRO Problems on Apple IIGS

If you are so sure that it's the serial connection, then given the fact that he's running OSX then I think maybe it's your guess #3... that maybe he's got a USB to SERIAL adapter with a PROLIFIC PL-2303 chipset. Those chipsets are pure crap. I have one of those and I could not, for the life of me install the driver for it under OSX.

I went ahead and bought a Tripp Lite Keyspan USB to SERIAL adapter model USA-19HS and it works fine with OSX and ADTPro.
