Stealth G3 Serial Port on B&W

Not much of a hack, eh? These are supposed to install in minutes...

I bought my Stealth port off of a guy on eBay months ago for a decent price. Held off on installing it because I had no internal modem cable. I thought I'd need to find an OEM Apple modem with cage and cable - only to shelf the modem board forever. Found "welovemacs.com", from whom I bought an empty cage and cables set for $10, so I'm psyched.

Until I try to install it! The serial port header and connector were so wide that, when connected, the case could not close (both halves are needed). I needed to use snips on the back end so the port would fit flush, and needed to fold two metal tabs aside. For the Stealth PCB I needed to desolder the pin header, and solder the cable wires directly to the PCB. It took a lot of fidgeting.

Now it works perfectly, my B&W sending MIDI for the first time! I know that the modem cage is the Apple part number for their OEM B&W modem… I am guessing that maybe I really bought from the guy a G4 Stealth port? Anyway, it did not fit, but with some patience I made it fit. Ack!

aha

I had one of those. It worked really well. But there is a small mechanical difference between the G3 and G4 versions. When I upgraded to a G4, I had to modify mine to fit too.

Re: Stealth G3 Serial Port on B&W

what really sucks is the longer interface is the one that i need... for the g3 b&w & yikes g4 the modem port is like double the length

on the g4 they folded the connection size in half somehow and made it no longer compatible with the older modems or peripherals

if anyone has a "geethree stealth" or "griffin g3port" for a b&3 powermac g3 that they arent using - please sell it to me!
