What is the best email application for Classic?
Is it possible to switch from Mail (v1.2.5 running in X.2.8) back to a Classic email application and retain email folders/mailboxes?

I mean, I would like to use something else, but if OE is the only choice, I will have to live with it, but how can I import something in given the format of Mail (in OS X) is later than that of OE?

I have downloaded a copy of Claris Emailer and it looks okay (version 2- a 30 day trial). Anyone got any experience with this?
Right off the bat, I do not see anyway to get my email folders in. Kinda hoping to find a way to migrate everything backwards to a Classic application if I can...

I used to support that... back in the day... when there was still a Claris Corp.
Claris Emailer 2.0v3 is by no means the absolute end-all-be-all of Classic emailing, but it is quick and easy. I would prefer using Emailer over Outlook Express or even Entourage... but that's just me...
My needs are pretty simple, I may have occasional need to use include attachments. I do expect to recieve mail with attachments.
From what I have seen, the folder tab seems like it would allow me to keep a good organization of previous emails.
What are the cons of this tool, compared to others? Is there any way I can somehow archive my current catalog of emails from Mail and make them accessible (even if only in a read-only format outside of the Claris tool) for reference when composing new emails?

* Plain text only. You can only send plain text, you can only recieve plain text. HTML emails will sometimes be munged (pronounced "munj-d" - and, yes, that is the technical term we were taught during training for Emailer support) The either will not display at all, or you will get nothing but code.
* Vary large attachments can cause problems. As long as your attachments are less that about 500MB per piece, everything should be fine.
I really can't remember much more than that. I guess I need to open up my copy here and see what's what. I can't remember how the import thing works for email, so I'll look into that, too.
I do get several folks who send things in HTML format. I am leaning very strongly towards Claris, but what would be your second choice if the need to support HTML was critical?

Sad to say, but my second choice if HTML was necessary would be either Outlook Express or Entourage (part of Office 2001)...
been using it for mebbe a decade? One of the reasons I haven't switched my main desktop over to X, though I imagine it'd run fine under Classic.
A major advantage for me is its ability to retrieve AOL mail, AFAIK no other email client can do that ('cept AOL itself - Ugh!!) I've still got a legacy AOL mail addy on a $5/mo. account, and there's no way I'd even think of using AOL's web interface or AOL itself to access that mail. Emailer makes it easy to retrieve on a once-every-few-hours schedule.
It also ably handles multiple accounts and makes it easy to set them up. It's got pretty sophisticated filtering abilities. It has a very nice set of Applescript libraries, making it a very flexible kit, nice if you want to automate and integrate with other processes.

It's an amazing piece of coding really, considering its advanced age I think it's holding up rather nicely.

heh heh, my previous comment mentioned a decade's use, but I'm apparently a bit confused about time. I know I've been using it since '99 or so, which is tad short of a decade (at least in human years.)
Ahh, I figgered it'd run under Classic. In fact if my (obviously lousy) memory serves me (which it may not!) I did try it and was happy with the results.

Claris Emailer first released in 1995... purt-damn-near a decade...
Eudora is pretty nice, and has a Classic and OS X version.
Eudora Light 1.5.5 is the fastest, most intuitive, most stable and smallest email client that I have ever used. It even has filters.
The newest version
is an OE killer, is being actively developed for Classic and is freeware.

So for any given Classic email app (or any of the specific ones mentioned here), how can I get my email out of Mail (for X) and into said Classic email app?
I'd call that a feature.
Since my previous comments I've switched to X fulltime and continue to use Emailer v2.0v3 as my email client. I don't give a cr@p about html formatting, in fact I have a mail action that sends all html-formatted mail to my "deleted mail" folder!
, and my only connections are via POP and AOL. Honestly, I haven't had any problems with Emailer ever! It just works.
What's really cool is that without any hiccups I could (if I needed to) seamlessly switch to a PB5300 running 7.6 and back again. How many apps do y'all use every day that can make that claim!! Err, might be a tad bit slower . . . heh heh, but still!
Yikes, I just checked and my mail database is over 450MB! MegaBytes! Over 5 years worth of mail!! And it still runs very nicely (fast!) on my TiBook. I keep meaning to clear out the old deadwood, but since the humungo DB doesn't seem to cause any problems I just haven't gotten around to it. Kinda nice to be able to do a quick search for an email from several years ago, and find it!
Edit: I do have one wish on my Emailer wishlist - it can't do SMTP. That means I can't send mail via my Comcast accounts from non-Comcast locations. Errr, well, maybe I can, but I haven't really figured out how yet. Anyway, it means I have to use my AOL account to send mail when I'm on the road (as I am right now.) Not a biggie really, just a minor annoyance.
