System 6.01 problems Apple IIGS

Hi all,
I've just replaced my logic board on my Apple IIGS with one which I got from ebay (action reported fully tested and working). ROM 01

I'm using a CFFA3000 and a hard disk system 6.01 image from http://www.whatisthe2gs.apple2.org.za

I get this when trying to load System 6.01: (see attachments)

I've run the Apple IIGs QRAM diag disk. All tests pass. I've run the Apple IIGS Diagnostics V3.0 disk too. All tests pass.

Am I missing something? Is something else faulty on the Logic Board that the diagnostics programs don't detect?

Thanks,
Rob

Out of curiosity - did it replace a ROM01 you had originally?

ROM 1 came on the logic board I purchased. My original one is still on the old board.

I'll try the image from the other site tonight and report back.

Just tried 4 different images from ASIMOV FTP and the same problems.

What happens is System 6.01 starts loading. I see the red bar move then it beeps, I get a little pixel corruption then the red bar continues all the way to the end. Then it freezes. Does not advance.

Hmmmmm

1. How much memory do you have this ROM 01 expanded to?
2. Have you run self-tests?

Re: System 6.01 problems Apple IIGS

In general while installing the system with disks the computer is examined and some informations
are saved within the installation of system 6.01 to the harddisk ( specially in the related subdirectories )
by specifying which overlays are to be loaded while trying to initialize the desktop....

Then when the System 6.01 has completed the loading it tries to initialize that overlays/drivers.
If it tries to initialize a device that is not present to the system, it might get stuck.
I therefor recommend strongly not to use finished image of System 6.01 but instead install
System 6.01 from disks to the harddisk
! This makes sure that the installed system is consistent
to the present hardware.

Therefor instead of using finished image load the diskimages and make the disks with ADTpro
and install the System 6.01 from disks to the CFFA to the startup volume.

Prior to this task checkout several settings in the option panel:
correct setting and running of the clock/time/date/ format of date and time : am/pm or 24 hour - order of day/month/year
correct setting of language and keyboardlayout!!! most common mistake !
correct setting of speed ( during installation it should be set to normal )
after checking correct settings ( all listed above and slot settings )
continue to installation from Disk to Harddisk.

Re: System 6.01 problems Apple IIGS

Hi there.
Checked all the bios settings to make sure they were good. I've even installed a battery replacement kit to save my setting once I power off.

I've downloaded from Asimov ftp the 6.01 install disk images. I created the disks on real floppies using ADTPRO. Booted off the floppies and I get the same problems. Loads the loading bar, reaches the end then beeps and freezes. I get a little pixel corruption to.

I've changed the ROM1 and other chip near the speaker connector from my other logic board. Same problems. The only other chip that is removable is the CPU. I have not changed that. Could it be the problem? The logic board I purchased off ebay said 100% tested and working.

All tests from the dealer diagnostic disk pass with no problems. I've set it on repeat to run many times. I've tried other diagnostics programs and all check out fine. No errors. I'm not sure if these diagnostic programs actually work?

Any ideas on what could be wrong? Its a real shame not to be able to run System 6 on my Apple IIGS. Sad

David:
I'm running the original Apple IIGS RAM card fully populated. I've ran many different ram tests and all pass. Should I assign RAM disk in the setup menu? Or just leave it as default?

Robbo

You've checked the computer exhaustively and it ought be OK. Ditto the OS install except a better source for the software is the AppleCare Support Site . Time to look elsewhere

None of the diagnostics you've run will address any non-Apple peripherals you have installed

I've run into almost identical "odd beeps and sterile progress bars" when I messed up an SCSI installation

I'd look to your CFFA3000 installation (and remove any other stuff you have attached). I don't have one (heavy breathing here) but I'd bet the site's FAQs and forum would be a productive source.
