Kodak Video Adapter on Mac SE Superdrive?

Hello,

Sorry for the pic heavy post.

Some of you may have been following my exploits with getting my Monitor II fixed in the forum above - I've moved onto a pair of Macintosh compacts, the Macintosh SE Superdrive and an older Macintosh Plus.

Neither are functioning, but the SE Superdrive at least powered on, with nothing on the screen but significant HDD activity, maybe some floppy activity, but couldn't be sure. No chimes. But it seemed like the first candidate for some surgery.

The SE Superdrive seems to have come from Kodak, which was interesting. It had this label stuck on top:

Cracked it open today and saw utter devastation.

The entire yoke assembly was gone, from the upper neck of the tube all the way to the vertical board (I think that's what it is called). It's just gone, I can't find any traces of the copper windings anywhere, or glass. Think the damage must have occurred long ago, perhaps all was cleaned up and the machine put back together? The cable that runs from the analog board to the yoke is also missing.

My first thought - 'f*ck me'. What the hell happened in here? I've never seen anything like it, especially on a computer that has been put back together.

My only clues came from the top label. It warned against removing the cover as a HR/M video adapter was attached to it. I'm assuming they mean this board, which was floating around inside:

So a few questions:

  • What happened to the yoke?
  • No really, what happened to the yoke?
  • What is the Eastman Kodak Mac Video Adapter Card?
  • Is it worth the repair?

As mentioned I have a nonworking Mac Plus, so thinking about transplanting the monitor and yoke across to the SE Superdrive. Should I also transplant the vertical board?

Answered my own question with a quick Google - the Eastman Kodak Mac Video Adapter was used in conjunction with an LCD Projector. I get the idea that it was placed over an overhead projector to project images from the Mac. Interesting but not really useful (unless someone is looking for one of these?)

Should I go ahead with my CRT/yoke/vertical board transplant?

Re: Kodak Video Adapter on Mac SE Superdrive?

Other companies have made similar video adapters for all-in-one Macs. I remember one for the LC 5xx series that piggybacked on top of the video processor and offered a Mac video port on the back of the machine (also for connecting to an LCD overhead projector panel).

My guess is that your machine got dropped. The neck of the CRT is fairly thin, and with the weight of the yoke assembly I could see it snapping if the machine fell from a sufficient height. Whomever dropped it probably opened it up to see if something just came loose, then closed it back up after realizing the extent of the damage. Lucky that it simply broke on yours; a lot of times, when CRTs lose vacuum catastrophically, the whole tube implodes.

CWJ_Wilko,

I had the same thing happen to me with a Color Classic
that I had won on eBay.
When I removed the computer from the box I heard
the tell-tale sound of tinkling glass.

I set it aside for a few days, then proceeded
to crack it open.
The CRT as broken off and shattered just like yours.
From the beginning of the stem to the Yoke and board.

Everything else was good, including the board.
It just so happened that I had another CC sitting there
so I removed the CRT from it and got myself a good, running CC.

Re: Kodak Video Adapter on Mac SE Superdrive?

Thanks all. I'll open up the Mac Plus tomorrow and if the CRT is intact, I'll be able to bring it over to the SE Superdrive.

What was curious about the damage was that there was no debris inside, no glass, no copper from the tube, and the cable that runs from J1 to the tube was completely gone. My best guess is that someone cleaned all the crap out and put it back together with the intention to one day fix it, but never got around to it. A bit strange that it never made it to the landfill. It would be a great feeling to get it going again.

I'm guessing it'll be fine to bring over the CRT and the vertical board as one unit? I've read before that this is preferred, is that correct? I have no confidence in the original SE Superdrive vertical board after the damage, so hoping this is fine.

I still need to clean the logic board (dishwasher maybe?) before I put it all back together. I was thinking of a coat of Retr0Bright but not enough sun in Sydney at the moment, so might put it off until next time I take it apart.

Re: Kodak Video Adapter on Mac SE Superdrive?

Unfortunately no luck, I've replaced the monitor and rebuilt the Mac but still having the same symptoms, no power to the monitor (no raster or filament glowing), no chime, and the floppy disk drive is clicking loudly despite a clean.

I'm guessing this now has to be a power supply issue, or less likely something to do with the analog board. I say less likely because a visual inspection turned up nothing wrong with the board, but I'm yet to crack open the power supply.
