Apple-1 Koa wood cases

So I recently had the opportunity to examine two Koa wood cases on Apple-1. There were a few interesting things about them. Both cases had had some modifications, one extreme one, minor.

So here are the facts I can glean from comparing them, besides the fact the cases were absolutely beautiful.

The sides, back and front are solid and the top/bottom are a paneling type wood.

First, the Datanetics keyboards have spacers that prevent the screws from protruding. The spacers are simply a piece of wood paneling the size of the keyboard on either side glued down.

Next the bottom of the case is drilled for ventilation. On one of these cases they went to extreme and also cut out for a hole for a fan mounted on the bottom facing down and replaced the two typical Triad transformers with a single one to make room. Yes, almost every Byteshop board I have seen with orig supplies are triad, not Stancor.

The boards are mounted with the edge connector to the back. However if you don't push the board as far back as possible, the video connector will "hit" the Keyboard. Both boards had mounting points moved for this. The extremely modified case used nylon through spacers, so there are new holes drilled, I can see the original ones and they work. The other board, the mount points were moved to make room for, I think a video modulator (no proof, just a guess) but there were no holes drilled. Simply wooden spacers made of paneling glued down. Moving the board back to the original position is trivial since no holes were drilled.

There are cutouts for square fuse holder, power cord and an extra power socket, powerswitch, and for the ACI that were consistent between the two cases, the modified case had other holes cut for video.
