Hi,
a friend of mine recently bought a Quadra 840 av on ebay. When he received the Mac, it starts up and the Chime is clearly audible. Inside MacOS there seems to be no sound and in the control panel there is no sound device listed. Do you have any idea, why he can hear the Chime, when there is no sound device available? He already tried several OS's but with no success.
Blackswan
blackswan,
1. Has he tried to play a CD in the CD Drive to see if the CD Drive shows up on the screen and
he has sound?
2. Has he checked the SCSI and Audio cables from the CD Drive to the Motherboard?
3. Has he checked to make sure he has the correct CD Drive Drivers loaded?
Steven
Hi steven,
thanks for your reply. I was wondering about your focus on CD-ROM, because the system sound is already not there, do you think CD-ROM playback could work nevertheless? I will ask him and get back.
Blackswan
swan,
I focused on the CD Drive because I happen to have
the Quadra Manual here.
You have the chime as the unit starts.
That means you must have some sort of sound.
I guess that if I'm wrong, he's going to
have to check to be sure that his Control Panel
and his Drivers are installed correctly.
Steven
UPDATE:
1. What OS is your friend using?
2. If it is OS 7.5 or greater:
a. Restart the Mac while holding down the spacebar.
b. This will take you into the "Extension Manager".
c. He should be able to select the extensions required to get sound.
d. The next time he get's a chance, tell him to get a copy of "Mac Secrets"
at least 5th Edition.
e. It has all kinds of good stuff inside (kinda like a Twinkie). lol
