I have installed Virtual II on a new MacBook (OS 10.12.4)
All is working fine.
I installed in Slot 1 and 2 (tested both) the SSC.
Connected a USB to Serial Adapter. The Adapter is recognized by the Mac.
I connected it to a modem.
Then I started ProTerm - installed the modem (same installation with that modem that works on a real Apple IIe perfectly all right).
On Virtual II ProTerm can not initialize the modem. If I put it "online" and dial out - the modem dials and makes a connection, but ProTerm is not switching into Terminal mode.
I tried all functions in Virtual II for the SSC and the USB connection.
Also put the firewall on and off on the MacBook and allowed all incoming connections for Virtual II.
What can I do now?
I don't know if you are aware of this, but just hooking up any old usb to serial adapter is a no-no.

I forgot to mention that I'm using an USB to Serial Adapter - it is recognized by the MacBook and VirtualII.
Meanwhile I moved a step forward:
I connected my 300 Baud Anderson/Jacobson acoustic coupler to the MacBook. Dialed out with my old Telephone with landline ... and Virtual II got with ASCII Express a connection to a BBS! ( In installation menu 4 I changed to "permanent carrier").
Speedy told me that ASCII Express is great ... and that it is ... ProTerm is still not working but I will try again ...
Perhaps if you can determine what init string that ascii express is using, maybe you can then enter it on Proterm.
Anyway, if I were you, I would be using a usb to serial adapter with an ftdi chipset to make sure that the serial connection is in spec.
This is because the recognition of the adapter means absolutely nothing.
