Memory questions for building a replica with mimeo 1

Hello all...

I'll be collecting the parts and board to build a mimeo 1. I'm thinking of just getting the unicorn electronics kit to save the headache of tracking down the very old chips, My question is about memory, I see that there's some mods that can be done to expand the memory to 20K and 32K but this requires pcb trace cuts and extra chips.

The unicorn kits comes with the 4K chips and I'm pretty sure that gets you to 8K with all 16 positions populated. Are there chips that I can use to get to 16K or more without cutting traces and adding chips? My goal is to be able to run Super Star Trek and I think that needs 16K.

Thanks
Steve

You usually need to modify the board if you want to add more than 8k by using bigger ram chips to play Super Star Trek. If you just want to add more ram chips using the edge connector this can be done with a proto board and a couple of jumper wires on the main PCB to select the memory banks. I know a few people who have done that for RAM and even EPROMs tot hold basic.

However there is an 8k version of Star Trek that works great.

If you can't find the 8k version let me know and I can send you a wave file or source.

Cheers,
Corey

Star Trek on the Apple 1 isn't the best combination in the world, primarily because of the slow terminal and need to constantly display most of a screens worth of data.

Just figured I'd warn you.

But it's still loads of fun.

I actually like it better than the Sol-20 version which to me runs so fast I can barely think since they take advantage of the memory mapped display and try to make it realtime.

The Apple-1 Trek feels better than the teletype version it's based on and runs a little better than twice as fast. It also saves paper over playing Trek on my ALTAIR with a teletype.

Cheers,
Corey
