Re: Spectre and Meltdown. . . .

Looks like even PowerPC is vulnerable to Spectre. 68K processors aren't, although they can play it.

Re: Spectre and Meltdown. . . .

What's interesting is that PowerPC being affected is actually not a trivial thing -- it's still a viable processor platform for embedded devices, specifically things like enterprise network switches and routers. The saving grace for most of them is that they don't allow arbitrary execution of user-level code (i.e. you can't install and run a program on it), so they're, for practical purposes, mostly immune.

Re: Spectre and Meltdown. . . .

I know, I work at the University of Pittsburgh in IT and all we have been dealing with the past three days is this. I was on a call today with our security, network engineering, support services, etc. and I was a smart a$$ and said "well at least my Apple IIe isn't vulnerable and we should all go back to the 6502". Everyone laughed so I figured I would post it here.

It really isn't a laughing matter through. This will be bad. Especially as soon as there are exploits in the wild. Sigh!

Re: Spectre and Meltdown. . . .

The far more interesting question is:
Did services like NSA really get their "sticky fingers" that far in IT business to
"initiate" the invention of that kind of "trap-doors" even in CPU's ?...
remember that military finance and influence entered that IT-market since the 60's....
and "how far are they in that CPU's now" ???

and the next question ahead is:
isn't JAVA itself s severe security breach ??? and why did modern browsers disable in the meantime
the option to disable the user to select the option
to disable the execution
of JAVA-code ???

Your 65x02 is definitely vulnerable to this kind of attack, and always was. It has no memory protection!

All memory and registers are always available to any other program you run. Smile
