Apple-1 replica Class at VCF East (updated, now there is also a restoration class)

So I was asked to do an Apple-1 replica class at VCF east on Friday April 15th.

I have been thinking about the content of the class and what people would like to hear about.

I figure you guys would be best to help me come up with the agenda for a one hour class.

Here is what I have so far...

1.Differences between Mimeo, Newton and something about the replica-1.

2. Where to find parts? The perils of eBay.

3. Where to begin in the build up.

4. General things that can go wrong.

5. Troubleshooting first power up.

6. Keeping the unit running for years to come.

7. The Keyboard problem, where to find and what to use.

How does this sound? Should I remove or add anything?

Thanks,
Cheers,
Corey

Hi Corey,

Perhaps it would be good to point out the various component differences between NTI and pre-NTI (or at least that there are differences), and how matching date codes and chip markings make a big difference in cost etc? Also how NTI is probably easier to do due to better availability of Signetics versus Fairchild.

I guess it depends how accurate they want their build Smile

Re: Apple-1 replica Class at VCF East

Well I was just asked to also do a class about restoring Apple-1 also on Friday...

So I think that class will cover the differences between NTI and pre-NTI. I think that class will be pretty cool because I can cover reforming caps, restoring ceramic caps, cleaning the board, common things that are a problem on Apple-1s. There are different issues with bringing up the real thing that are different than a reproduction even one that is super accurate.

I think I will have to make some calls to see if I can bring an NTI and Byte Shop Apple-1 for people to examine. Obviously there are some logistics and security to work out... But I know who to call... Wink

Cheers,
Corey

My suggestion for Mimeo or Newton:
While the builder waits for the right keyboard that matches the Apple 1's old look, I suggest using a PS2 keyboard and an arduino board like UNO as this is more cheap and easy to do. The UNO also has built-in serial communication for sending monitor commands to the Apple 1 replica.

Here are some more things to consider

power supply hookup
cassette interface fun
how to load and run an assembly program
how to load and run a BASIC program
The 20K memory mod/hack

I have about 10 of those quick reference cards left, that I could send you to hand out, if you are interested.

Hi Corey,

Do you know if there are any videos available online of your Apple-1 restoration class?

Thanks,
-Jimmy.

I don't think that one was recorded. I know last year an effort was made to record the classes.

What kind of things are you interested in?

I know you've shared A1 board restoration tips in various posts in the past, but I was hoping to watch a video to see a complete overview. My colleagues and I routinely repair/restore PCBs that are far more complex, but there are things that are unique about an A1 that it would be good to be aware of in advance. Perhaps this is something I should follow up with you offline?
