In about 1984 I got a copy of the Flash Integer Basic compiler and made a compiled version of the Apple II Startrek (later Appletrek) game. The complied version is much faster than the Integer Basic version and significantly improves the playing experience. Anyone who played the game in the old days should try this version.
This version of Startrek was first written on the Apple 1 and ported to the Apple II in early 1977 and was included in tape form with the early Apple II’s. After getting a note from the copyright owners the name was changed to Appletrek and the Klingons became Klarnons. I have attached a disk file and a note with brief instructions.
And as I recall, game play instructions were in the red 1978 reference manual. Can you imagine nowadays a computer manual including game instructions?? :-D
Games were the big interest in the early days and they were widely shared. I have a lot of programs by users that we got around 1978 that are mostly Integer basic and were mostly on 13 Sector disks. My favorite Lo Res Graphics program was “The Great American Probability Machine” by Bruce Tognazzini written about that time. Steve Jobs saw the program and hired him.
The Startrek instructions in the Red Manual are for an early version of Startrek that was very similar to the Apple 1 version. It was delivered with the earliest Apple IIs that had at least 16K of memory, the other side of that tape had a Hi-Res Demo program. Those tapes were made on a string of several Panasonic Recorders connected to an Apple II and the labels were one color and hand stamped.
The newer version of Startrek in this thread is an “upgrade” from the first one and is described in a document called “THE APPLE TAPES INTRODUCTORY PROGRAMS FOR THE APPLE ][“ and had a Star Wars program on the other side of the tape. Due to higher demand the newer tapes were recorded by a recording studio in San Francisco and had printed labels with multicolor Apples. Note that there is also a document called “THE APPLE TAPES INTRODUCTORY PROGRAMS FOR THE APPLE ][ Plus“ which does not have any Startrek info.
