Apple IIe USA Motherboard in Apple IIe Pal case+Powersupply

Hi all,

Is it possible to use a USA Apple IIe motherboard with a Apple IIe Pal Powersupply and case?  I gather all apple powersupplies step down the voltage to something less than the 240V (in the PAL version) or the 110v ( in the US) versions right?

I'm thinking aobut replacing my Apple iie pal board thats blown with a USA one off ebay.

Thanks,

Rob

I am pretty sure the DC

I am pretty sure the DC output of either a 220V European or a 115V US/Canada power supply is the same.  You should be able to use a US motherboard, except unless you've got a monitor or TV that can display NTSC or some other alternative to display from your //e, you may run into problems using it.

Also I am not sure whether you will run into keyboard encoding issues using a Euro layout with a US mobo.  Plus the US mobo will not be able to display foreign language characters.  Euro spec stuff is basically just not found over here in the US, so I've got little experience with it.

I don't know whether it is possible to swap the keyboard chips from your blown Euro mobo over to the US one.  I do think that your Euro CHARGEN ROM will probably work in a US mobo though.

You probably meant to say "I don't think...". The US mobos use 4K character ROMs, containing only a single set of characters. The Euro/PAL mobos use 8K character ROMs, containing two separate character sets (selected by a little switch on the underside of the keyboard). So the character ROMs of US/Euro motherboards do not match.

You are probably right.  It may work, but may only display one character set of the two.  I'd have to look at the pinouts of those two chips.  Until it was determined it would work or not I wouldn't try it in order to avoid risk of crisping something.

You should be abl to swap the

You should be abl to swap the CHR ROM from your PAL logic board to the USA logic board, so that your keyboard works as before. The PSU itself takes different input voltage at AC 220-240/50hz, versus 110-120V/60hz; however the output voltage from either should be -5, +5, -12, +12. (These are worldwide industry standard component voltage requirements).

My AE Vulcan PSU has a 120/240 toggle switch on it.

Don't toss that bad //e logic board. Some of us can repair them, and it is useful to us for spares.
