Apple //e + Prodos 8 = Headache

I purchased a Uthernet card in hope of browsing the interweb on my unenhanced //e. Using my old ipod I loaded Contiki 2.7 onto 5.25 disks using the cassesste tape port. Booting up the disk Prodos 8 tries to load and complains that it requires an enhanced Apple //e or better to run.

Any other options I can try? Seems that Contiki bundles prodos 8 with their sofware?

Cheers!

Use the new ProDOS-8 2.4

You will want to use a copy of ProDOS 2.4 or later (which can be obtained at ProDOS-8 website.  Official ProDOS 8 versions after 1.9 (up through 2.0.3) only support the 65C02 and 65816.

enhance it

Alternatively you could get an enhancement kit for you IIe.

Not sure if you need to have you IIe remain un-enhanced  - there is a small body of software that doesn't like enhanced IIes but most of the stuff ut there either needs the enhancement or doesn't care.  They sell the kit at ReActiveMicro.com

Good points!

Thanks for the suggestions and yes I now have access to the Contiki volumes booting Prodos 2.4. That lead to the discovery that to run Contiki I need to be  at least an enhanced //e with 80 col. board or a //c.  Probably the reason Contiki is bundled with the earlier Prodos to let you know you need an enhanced apple.

As for the enhanced upgrade that sounds like the direction to go although I hate to mess with such a good performer thus far. I sourced a //e chip set off the bay some time back and looks like it has the enhanced chip set included like what reactivemicro has.

Cheers!

Your EPROMs are the enhanced version, the 65C02 is also suitable.

I doubt that. Contiki itself could check for the //e enhanced without resorting to using ProDOS to check for it, especially knowing that ProDOS 2.4 and above removed that restriction. They rely on reading the docs to notice that you need the enhanced chipset. I have a variety of enhanced an unenhanced e systemms, various //gs, ][ and ][+ systems, and when I write software, I test it on all intended targets that I can to try to find issues and to solve them.

I could swear that Contiki was devoloped primarily using a //gs.
