Wireless stuff

This interface is almost unuseable on my setup so I'll be brief until I can respond. I know nothing of wireless but an internet cafe with free wireless access moved right next door. In NYC, that's close. I have a ziffed Beige G4 and a 3400c (I'll pass on using my Plus or SE/30). What do I need to set up a wireless connection that will allow me to use the free access from next door? Thanks. William

Assuming that they're running

Assuming that they're running a VPN-less, free and open network, all you'd need is a wireless network card for each machine. If you get sufficient signal strength, their network should appear as a network you can connect to.

If there's insufficient strength, there are a couple ways to cheat, including getting a wireless signal repeater with a high-gain antenna.

You can also build a fairly h

You can also build a fairly high gain directional antenna for very cheap from a USB WiFi dongle and a parabolic mesh "dish" made from a Chinese fry pot scoop. If you need to get a better signal, a better card such as a Senao would be a good investment, but if you need cheap and won't be moving it much ie. the Beige G4, a simple USB hack would probably do quite well. You might do some scouting and see if they do have an open public network and if so where the AP is in relation to your domicile. If they are totally free andd open, you should be nice and go in to buy coffee and snacks every few days to keep up some good relations. :macos:

wireless stuff

It's a *very* well-known NYC bakery and if I get free access I'll be happy to pick up cannolis every once in a while. In the summer when my windows are open I'm always awakened by the aroma of baking croissants in the early morning hours since I'm situated between two bakeries. Where can I get more info on the USB wok hack?

Thanks.

Ah, yeah, that is the link I was thinking of. If I was thinking at the time it would hev been in my history list... ::) I really like the aplications that that hack is getting. A NGO relief org in Afghanistan is using a NZ WiFi hack to get communication? Sweet! That's the kinda stuff the internet should be known for, not just pr0n.
