Yay! I'm #10 overall! Now all three of my "always-on" basement computers are running it. Theyr'e the ones I mentioned way before. Considering that two of them are G3 300s and the other a P3 667, I think it's pretty impressive.

My 800 MHz QuickSilver is arriving in a day or two. It'll be my main machine, but there's 6 hours a day that I'm at school minimum, plus night time where it'll be idle. Should I sleep it or have it run Seti when it's idle?

Does anyone know if... Seti runs in XP when you open the client and then minimize it? The little green icon goes to the taskbar near the clock. I think it's still running, but I'm 100% unsure.

Heh, even from just having the 3 towers on downstairs makes that single room warmer by about 5°! Biggrin

Yippee!

Re: back up...

...and woo, Mr. bobotech, last time I looked you were under 50 units, and now suddenly you're over 100!
There goes my dream of getting out of 12th on the list. Acute

LOL.. i have i think 4 or 5 pentium 4 comptuers that are in my office (2.8ghz or 2.6, can't remember which) all running seti since I left last thrusday. :-). thats my secret weapon(s). PLus i have my 2.8ghz p4 running it on screen saver at home (but that only pumps out like 2 units a day since I use that comptuer a lot) and my wife's celron 1.2ghz which is currently running 24.7 only seti and my kids xp1800 in the basment which is running seti as his screensaver.

I won't win any lowest per unit times or anything but I can try to see just how many units i can pump out before I lose the p4's in my office. LOL

I think i had a total of 17 or 27 units as of last sunday (not yesterday).

I've officially been 0wned in that department, so don't feel bad. (Flipping Opterons. Bleah!) ;^b

The big debate for me is whether I leave my machine on long enough to get my average under the magic three hour mark anyway.

Running SETI on Windows

By default the Windows screensaver client only runs when the screensaver activates. You have to go into preferences to set it to run all of the time.

That reminds me, on the P4's that I am using, they have an application call the Intel Active Monitor which monitors the heat zones. Only problem is I think that it is calibrated a bit low. All 4 of those stinkin' P4's keep coming up with "too hot" alarm for zone 2 (they are all the same machine) when crunching numbers for Seti. I just ignore the alarms.

They probably actually are overheating.

The dirty little secret about Intel and Pentum IVs is that for desktop applications Intel *doesn't* base their heat sink and cooling recommendations on "worst case" scenarios. (Like running SETI) Instead they give manufacturers specs and base their "boxed" CPU coolers on a fuzzily defined "typical usage pattern". Which boils down to something like a 70-80% duty cycle.

Pentium IVs will throttle if they get too hot, so you probably won't kill them. But they will be slower.

Wow. They are boxed cpu's with the intel branded fan so what you say makes sense. What is your recommendation for my personal p4 at home? SHould I get a better fan/heatsink combo?
