Owners of Overclocked Macs

Hey there, just wanted to create a place to discuss all sorts of overclocking matters.
I am writing this on a beige G3 that I have just overclocked. It's factory setting is 300mhz, but this can be changed very easily. I found a VERY useful page on OCing, which can be found here: http://drivejumper.com/ClockupG3/homepage.html .
I managed to get my mac to boot at 583mhz (!), but stability is VERY bed (max uptime was 30 sec Blum 3 .
I ended up settling for 333mhz -- the lowest highest setting that it both a) booted on and b) didn't crash.

If you have found any mac-specific, or mac-related overclocking sites, here's the place to post 'em!

Oh, and be gentle, I'm new Wink

Get a cheap b/w 350mhz cpu fr

Get a cheap b/w 350mhz cpu from ebay. I put one into my beige and it overclocked to 450mhz at 75mhz buss speed and is rock solid stable on os 10.2.8.

If you really want to overclock (like i did, 100mhz is a significant boost), put the motherboard and stuff into a bigger standard atx tower case and add cpu fans and/or bigger heatsinks. (my cpu has a custom machined pentium 4 heatsink and fan.)

Overclocking Macs

Generally speaking you can overclock the CPU speed on Macs 1 step without any problems of overheating.
A beige can go from 233-266, 266-300, 300-333.
B&W can go from 300-350, 350-400, 400-450.

You can change the bus speed also but RAM and other things can affect it alot. You can overclock the CPU more if the bus speed is lowered but defeats the purpose.

Generally you can go 2 steps if you add a fan and better heat sink to the CPU. ie: 233-300, 266-33 & 300-400, etc....

It's a fun thing to play with but really doesn't make much difference by upping your CPU one step up. Your much better off buying a faster CPU. Used CPU's are cheap and easy to find.

I have a B&W G3 450 OC'ed to

I have a B&W G3 450 OC'ed to 500MHz. I put on a solid copper heatsink and it stays nice and cool! I also used some Arctic Silver 5 on the bad boy. It doesn't run near as fast as my 1.25GHz G4 eMac, but it runs much better than my 6500/225!!!

I managed to overclock my iMa

I managed to overclock my iMac quite well when it was chilled to -20 degrees C!

Then the usb died...but I think that had something to do with my soldering iron burning a hole in the IC...

Beige g3

I managed to get my beige G3 300 to run nice and stable at 354 mhz without aditional cooling Smile 70 mhz cache speed if I don't remember it wrong.

Another Beige Overclocker

I found a G3 400 Mhz processor in a dead B&W motherboard at work. Slapped it in my beige and it's running happily at 433 Mhz w/ the 66 mhz bus.
Any possibilities that I could go any faster?

I'm getting 500 from a 350 . . .

in a B&W, that's pretty good. I'd say try faster-faster-faster until it croaks . . . errr, I mean crashes, then dial it back a notch. :coolmac:

My B&W is overclocked from 35

My B&W is overclocked from 350MHz to 400MHz with no problems. I put my beige G3 up to 385 from 333, but it was un-stable. I am running it at 350MHz now and its working ok

The most overclocked beige I

The most overclocked beige I know of pork stackers over on XLR8. He had a 533 rated 7410 running at 706MHz stably. He no longer has the machine afaik.

I have clocked up a lot of systems. But never a beige. All have been G4's. Most people dont like doing the soldering work, so they send the CPU's to me and I OC them in exchange for something or other.

Lucky processor

I've been blessed with a stock 300MHz processor in my B&W G3 that runs without trouble at 400MHz.
I've played through Marathon I and half of Marathon 2 without trouble, and have also done some 3D work, which used to crash my old beige G3 with the same overclock.

I've just added the Radeon 92

I've just added the Radeon 9200 PCI card to my B&W now it's got 128MB of video memory! It's still acting a bit slgish when compared to my 1.25GHz eMac. so I'm probably going to throw in a or a 1.1GHz G3

I dont think it will ever mat

I dont think it will ever match the speed of the eMac. The eMac has a faster bus and the graphics chip is on an AGP bus, not PCI.

yeah I know that, but I just

yeah I know that, but I just want it to feel "peepier" And it's not like I run very many G4 based intensive tasks. Mostly I play War Craft III, use it as a Print Server, File Server, and iTunes Server, so the 1.1GHz G3 will be best for it. I'll also load it up wih 1GB of RAM. Right now it's only got 512MB. I thing that with the 1.1GHz G3, 1GB of RAM, and the Radeon 9200 it will feel very much more like a modern system and not something cercia 1999!
