Is This an Off Brand Apple II Plus Keyboard?

Hi. I am trying to go through some of my Apple II stuff. I have a few Apple II plus computers. Two of them have this kind of keyboard. Is it an off brand keyboard? I have a broken bone in my wrist, so I can not take the case apart to take out the keyboard to check further for a name. The two keys down toward the left have a red light and are CAPS LOCK and NUM LOCK. I am hoping someone here has seen one before.

Thank you for any help.

Re: Is This an Off Brand Apple II Plus Keyboard?

Hello Here2Learn,
i have seen in the time around 1982/1983 sometimes similar keyboards in Apple clones from Taiwan....
- it seems somebody has performed a repair by exchange and did not use the original spareparts
( if the rest is original...... ) - then that repair was performed not by a appleshop/distributor,
but rather by a thirdparty electronicshop
- or -
the entire is a Clone.....

due to the fact that the ROMs are ROMs in the top of the picture,
i´d guess the first option, that the guy who repaired the computers, cheated the owner...

the good news:
as far as i remember, the func-key at the bottom right side besides the space was used in the Taiwan-keyboards
to set on each letter key a entire command programmed and pressing the func-key and hitting the letter usualy
issued in programming mode the entire basic-command beginning with that letter to the line.....

example:
func + a => append
func + c => cos
func + d => do
func + e => end
func + f => for
func + g => goto
func + n => next
func + r => return
func + w => while
....
some of those keyboards even permitted to set the programmed basic-command-word to each letter by yourself ...
in such case it was requested to press the func-key several seconds, before you could enter the new command-word...
indicated by one of the leds in the lights keys to blink and when finishing the entering of the command word hitting
again the func key alone... next time func and letter was pressed the keyboard issued the new programmed basic command...

such programmable keyboards have been favored by guys, that did a lot of programming in those days and spent lot of
nights upfront their keyboards...... other programmers instead used a long 16pin flatcable with plug at the one side
and presssocket at the other side to get the keyboard connection out to the back of the Apple and long enough
to get the socket to the frontside and used such keyboards as external keyboards ....

Also the NUM-lock key of that keyboard had a special function... i just don´t remember that anymore correct...
i´m not sure - but as far as i remember, it turned part of the "normal" keys at the right side to a kind of number-key-block
the keys:

I O P .......... 1 2 3
K L : .. => .. 4 5 6
< > ? .......... 7 8 9

and the keys of :

............"
left arrow ... right arrow
..........shift

turned to:

........ -
.. * ........ /
........ +

....
you should just try to find out by hitting the NUM-lock
and then examining the behavior of the keys at the right side and
note the display maybe afterwards printing a pge with the
FUNC-key results and the NUMlock key results on a sheet of paper till your familiar again with the features....

That's certainly the first time I've seen that type of II keyboard, and I've seen a lot of clones over the years.

These are typical aftermarket replacement keyboards. They were popular with the hobbyists. If your Apple KB or encoder developed a problem, you could spend almost $200 to get it replaced at your authorized Apple dealer... or, drop $35-$55 USD and do it yourself. Replacing the keyboard is an easy task, so many DIY hobbyists did just that. Also, some people preferred the 'feel' of these keyboards - the keys were sculpted for better tactile response and weren't as stiff as the KB switches used by Apple.

Thank you very much for the replies, gentlemen.

speedyg: Thank you for typing out such a thorough reply. I think someone just replaced the original keyboards with this kind. It is an Apple case, lid, motherboard and power supply.

There are some programming words on the front of the keys, if you can see them.

Thank you for the help, everyone.
