GS/OS 6.0.1 Locks Up loading

I have a ROM 01 GS. I did have an old 5MB SCSI drive on this computer, but that drive died. Instead of replacing with another SCSI drive I've removed the SCSI controller card and replaceed it with a ReactiveMicro compact flash/IDE card installed in slot 7. The only other expansion card in my GS is a 4MB RAM card in the auxiliary slot.

The new card came with 4 partitions. Partition 1 is a group of Utilities, partition 2 was GS/OS 6.0.1, 3 is a game, and 4 is blank. Partition 1 and 3 boot fine. Partition 2 loads GS/OS and then it locks up on an empty desktop with the mouse pointer stuck with the busy icon instead of a pointer. I can move the mouse around so the computer isn't actually frozen.

I thought maybe their GS/OS installation came pre-installed with something that was causing the crash. So I booted to partition 1 and ran Copy II+ and formatted partition 2. I then booted the GS using a GS/OS 6.0.1 off 3.5" floppy and ran the Easy Setup and installed to partition 2. Installation completed successfully. I then rebooted the computer using partition 2 and got the same behavior. GS/OS shows loading, then it goes to the desktop and locks up before it shows any icons or the menu across the top.

If I hold the Shift key down while booting the GS/OS partition then the OS will actually load to the desktop and appears to work. My understanding is holding down the shift key bypasses loading NDA's and CDA's. However, I'm now running a base, new standard GS/OS install so there shouldn't be any custom add-ons trying to load.

At this point I'm not sure how to continue troubleshooting the issue as there is no log that I'm aware of and nothing appears on screen to let me know what might be causing the crash at loading.

Hoping someone here might have some ideas.

May be the memory card

My memonry is not as good as it used to be, but I believe I had a similar type of issue with GS/OS 6 on my Apple IIgs when I received my 4MB memory card. GS/OS would hang during boot up. I removed the 4MB card and installed my old Apple 1 MB card and GS/OS would boot fine. I mentioned this to my 4MB card vendor and they sent me a second 4MB card right away. The second one worked (and is still working)  great. Do you have another memory card you can try?

I currently do not have an

I currently do not have another memory expansion card. However, I did find out that the IIGS has a built-in self-test and I ran it and got a 07000000 error. From looking up the error it relates to the real time clock. Further reading indicated that error could be caused by a bad battery and not a bad clock chip. Since my IIGS still has the original soldered battery I'm going to first try replacing the battery with a 3rd party one to see if that resolves the issue.

Just an update on what I've

Just an update on what I've done so far:

1. Replaced the power supply. I used the ReactiveMicro replacement kit.

2. Replaced the battery on the motherboard

3. Ran the Microdrive set up and verified IIgs settings.

4. Formatted and re-installed 6.0.1 again

5. I've ran the built-in IIgs self diagnostics which now complete with no errors

6. I've ran a 3rd party memory test program which identified no memory issues

And still have the same locked up boot. Again, everything on volume 1 is running fine and all the floppy disks I boot off of run fine as well. And I can still get into 6.0.1 if I hold the shift key down.

I'm back to a standstill on what to do next.

I'm not a GS expert by any

I'm not a GS expert by any means, but...

Have you contated Henry Courbis at ReActive Micro about that?

He may have some insights into the matter and he's quite approachable.

I sent an email to their

I sent an email to their support email address this morning outlining what I'm seeing and what I've done. I did this because this morning I tried booting Appleworks GS from a disk. This loads a form of GS/OS. It would load the desktop and show volume icons on the desktop, but then would immediately lock up with the watch face mouse pointer. So I then removed the ReactiveMicro card from the computer and rebooted the Appleworks GS from disk. And it boots and works fine without the Micro Drive installed. So then I thought the issue may be coming from the Micro Drive which is why I've sent them an email.
