Mac SE/30 - What should I fix before I turn it on?

Hey Folks,

I just scored a Mac SE/30, whcih I believe has been in storage for some time.

Before I power it up, is there preventative work I should be doing?

My plan is to:

  • Check the battery (And remove if appropriate).
  • Check for cap leakage, possibly neutralizing if appropriate.
  • Check for dry joints, especially on the Analog board.
  • Arrange for a recap at first convenience.

Anything else I should be looking at?

Cheers!

Fek, I would power it on

Fek, I would power it on first. See i it powers up. If some then r/r the battery. If not, then go to diag.

So I tried it

And it boots. Well, it boots to the "insert disk" prompt, so I guess the internal drive is toast.

I'll have to get a bit to open it. Also want to check for cap leak and Battery death.

Cheers!

Well there's good news, and bad news.

The good news is the Varta battery is fine. Not a hint of corrosion. I'll order a replacement, as I suspect it's rather old by now.

The bad news is every single SMD cap has dropped it's alkaline guts over the motherboard. For now I have treated with acetic acid followed by a lot of Isopropyl alcohol.

I'll order replacements and desolder them when the parts come in.
