can any external SCSI 1 be used on the FastRam SCSI card for my Apple //GS or does it have to be a certain brand? Also what us the limit size? I want to install GSOS to boot from the hdd.

If you are talking about the RamFAST/SCSI card from Sequential Systems/C.V. Technologies, it was developed in the 1980s when the first version of SCSI was in effect; and it also has compatibility with SCSI's predecessor, SASI. So I think you're right that SCSI-I drives would be the most compatible.
The SCSI protocol can only address up to 1 GB using the earliest READ or WRITE commands; if the interface doesn't support later extended commands, then it won't be able to see any disk space past 1 GB.
GS/OS requires a ProDOS partition to boot off, and ProDOS partitions are limited to 32 MB each. One popular way to partition a drive is into four 32 MB ProDOS partitions, and the remainder in a large HFS partition.
