Will choplifter run without a joystick attached?

Hi guys,

Stupid question but should choplifter run without a joystick attached, I can load it but it does not start properly after the title screen and does not show the demo with the chopper just stuck on the pad, the game is running as you can pause the game using the esc key.

Not played choplifter on Apple II since the 80's but don't remember if on keyboard or joystick.

The game should run on any Apple II with 48k or more according to the game manual pdf

Remember playing this in the maths room at school on a green screen monitor ;) happy days!

I used to love that game and

I used to love that game and i couldn't remember the key strokes. We didnt have a joystick fir the  apple ii.

Don't know if it works but i found this

Special Keys: ESC key-For pause during play. CTRL S- Toggles sound on and off. The sound can be routed through the cassette port to an external speaker when on. Any key-Starts Play CTRL V 8- A- Reverses up and down, left and right, on the joystick

Hi thanks for your reply!Yeah

Hi thanks for your reply!

Yeah it was a great game simple and fun.

I'm pretty sure the school would not have had joysticks and it's interesting you didn't have a joystick but remember playing the game.

Thanks for the special keys I did see that in the manual but no mention of the control keys, the manual itself says requires joystick.

"An arcade style game for the Apple II or Apple II Plus with 48K and DOS 3. 2 or 3. 3. Requires joystick with two buttons!"

note that it states Apple II or plus yet the Apple II games lists say it's needs an Apple IIe? Confused now I just can't remember.

see game list on the link below for example

Researching further I can't

Researching further I can't find anything about playing without a joystick either. Was a long time ago but man I was sure it was on keyboard. Can't argue with the internet though. We did have some no name paddles, but i dont rember using those for it at all. When I get this apple ii restored I'll be able to find out. ;)

I couldn't find a way either.

I couldn't find a way either. I was indeed thinking of putting something together "DIY" :)

Choplifter controls

This is from memory, so take it for what it's worth:

A=up

Z=down

Right Arrow = angle right

left arrow = angle left

Apple key = fire

space bar = flip direction facing (r/l/middle)

Cap's Lock On?

Was the Caps-Lock key on?  These have to be in Caps keys, as the game was written for compatibility with the Apple II and II+ which both only had Cap-s keys.

The Letter "K"

Did you start the game by pressing the letter "K"?

Choplister does indeed reuore

Choplister does indeed require a joystock. The special keys are only for pause, sund, and inverted controls. It should boot and start play without one attached, unless it polls for joystick before it can begin execution.

Where did you get the disk? Is it a crack, an original disk, part of some collectin disk?

If you are using a crack, and it is not this one, then use this one:

I can confirm that it starts play without a joystick, but you cannot control the game.

Even if you can start it, you cannot  play  it without a joystick.
