Power Book 5300c

I was given a 5300c, just last week?? It has no system software on it. All I get is a question mark at startup. I need to know how and what system?? Jerry also gave me system 8.0, 7.6/7.5 update all on CD. I have a non apple cd player he also gave me. So how do I get a system on it. I also have two (2) Util. Disk one 8.0 and one 7 ? something.

PB 5300 will boot from CD

PowerBook 5300 will boot from an external SCSI CD-ROM drive. I know because I did it myself about a month ago with two different 5300s (a 5300cs and a 5300ce).

If you boot from, say, a Mac OS 8 or 8.5 CD and run Disk First Aid, you should be able to format the drive and install the OS on it from there.

Good luck, and happy new year!

5300 CD Boot

I need to know just how you get the 5300c to see the non apple CD-ROM Drive. I tryed CD-ROM (SCSI) Drive. Understand I am a exPC Guy. So Iam not sure just how you go about it. Like what are the steps to get CD-ROM to see the 5300.

Cable

I assume you have a PB SCSI adapter to attach an external drive. If so, just place a Mac OS CD in it, and press the "C" button after the boot sound. If you are lucky, it will work. CHECK THE CABLE - If the PB end is missing a pin, odds are that cable is a SCSI disk mode cable. If you have another Mac with SCSI, you could use a SCSI Disk mode adapter, and do a Universal install on the PB's hard drive using your other mac.

I hope I didn't confuse you too much.

5300 /CD-ROM

I held the "C" key down after the startup sound, I got no CD drive just a blank screen. I held about 2-3 min. Is there any outher way to put a system on the 53000c. I only have CD's 7.6/8.0. Ichecked the pins on the SCSI cable, no broken pins.

Thank-You
Happy New Year

cant you download system 7 fr

cant you download system 7 from apple?

or even better, get yourself a pc card memorystick or compact flash or whatever reader, and put your os 8 instal on that, then boot off of the pc card, it should do it if its in the computer when you turn it on.

ive done that before, and it works great

Firstly, if the 7.6 CD is a 7

Firstly, if the 7.6 CD is a 7.5 upgrade as you seem to say above, then it will only install over an existing 7.5. Does the 8.0 CD boot at all?

A lot of non-Apple branded or ROMed SCSI drives just flat out won't boot a Mac. The best thing to do would be to get hold of a true Apple SCSI CD drive - even an internal one, as you can then swap it into the case of the non-Mac external.

Another thing to check is that the drive you're using isn't actually a parallel port drive, as these used the same connector. They're not interchangeable, and can do horrible things to a SCSI host machine.

Another suggestion is to download the Disk Tools floppy image from the apple.com Older Software Downloads page, then use the free Windows/DOS utilities from emulators.com to create a Mac floppy from the image. That will be bootable, and will at least confirm the 5300 is functional.

You then might be able to get the installer to run - if you can see the CD at all. Use Disk First Aid from the floppy to verify/repair the internal HD first.

If that doesn't work, but you've successfully worked out how to create bootable Mac floppys on your PC, you could download the complete set of floppy images to install System 7.5.3 from the same Apple page. That will get you a booting 5300 without spending any more money.

BTW a Mac SCSI CD drive should cost you about $5 + ship on ebay.

Questions for others: Which version of Disk Tools?

PB 5300 Software (7.6)

Thank-You for your help. Jim the guy that gave me the 5300c also found a ZIP drive insert for the 5300c. I down load 7.6/7.6.1 update to the Zip on his iMac (think I going to get an iMac). After that I took system 7.5 off of a ToolsDisk disk and loaded to the system HD. Then load 7.6 and update 7.6.1. from the ZIP insert. Everything seems to be working fine I'll see in a few days.

Thank-You again
Steve

re: non-Apple branded or ROMed SCSI drives

Just an FYI about one of the earlier comments . . .

A lot of non-Apple branded or ROMed SCSI drives just flat out won't boot a Mac.

Not in my experience. I've never had a properly-functioning SCSI CD drive refuse to boot a Mac. The issue is with using the CD drive once booted from the HD. Many SCSI CD-ROM drives are not supported by the Apple-supplied CD driver, hence inserted CDs aren't seen by the OS.

However, a bootable Mac OS CD disk has a universal driver written to its bootblocks, obviating the need for specific drive support.

I too have seen PC specific C

I too have seen PC specific CD drives not work with the Mac OS. When you are dealing with pre-OS 8 software, drivers were at a minimum. Later Hardware had more universal compatibility, but to say you havent seen it doesnt make it so Smile
I have a CD drive in my basement that doesnt work with my Macs, however as was said an apple branded SCSI CD is easily had on ebay. (I have a half dozen or so)
I would get one if I were a serious hobbyist, simply to have access to CD's which were easily the lingua franca for so many years.

best,

dvsjr

Check inside your system folder:extensions folder for a file called:
HP DW-DJ 300 Series v6.0.3
This extension should then show up when you open the chooser. You can download the software here: http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macos/2024

It should all be automatic sc

It should all be automatic screen scaling. It sounds like it might be hardware. Probably a loose or bad LCD LVDS cable. Possibly the LCD itself.

Wow... what a link!

I came across this page while wondering about... I had no idea Apple still had pages like this:
Older Software Downloads

I imagine this would be a useful resource for Mac and Apple II enthusiasts alike.
