So after a lot of crap i finally installed a factory apple CD drive into my g3 clamshell ibook (300mhz) The original one broke on me and I tried to get fancy and install a 3rd party device. Couldn't get it to work. It was beyond my talent level. Now I got the new drive in and it reads data CD's just fine but it wants to initialize any music CD. What is the deal anyone know?

I have just booted from my Norton CD so the drive works. I just can't play music CD's

os 9 or os x if you use os 9 cheak your drivers and get itunes
btw My clamshell cd don't work at all and I see were
your are coming form
I am on OS 9.2.2 and I have itunes. The other odd thing I noticed was that when I open the "Apple CD Player" it could see the CD. It even listed the length of each song but it wouldn't play it. itunes couldn't even see it.
try and reinstall the os so mac that the cd drive is updated
maybe the curent cd rom diver is not compaldable with
music cds so reinstall the os with the clean install
box selected under options in the os 9 installer
hope this works for you

I have had Apple CD Player not work with a lot of drives. Mainly the ones that don't have an Analog output. IIRC, the CD-Rom drives in laptops no longer use Analog for the most part. It is done thru the IDE connection, and decoded by the OS. just download iTunes, as it is compatible with digital Audio.
