so i'm looking to a buy a new mac. i know the G4 is the right machine for me, but i can't decide whether to get a powerbook or stick with the sawtooth.
the powerbook would be useful since i travel so much, and will be doing a lot of studying abroad once i get to uni. it'll be compact, and easy to carry to and from studios (i'll be using it primarily for digital photography and music), and will just make things more simple by being compact.
the sawtooth would be more appealing considering the fact that it's harder to imagine someone trying to run off with a huge tower vs. a laptop. it's also cheaper, and more expandable (a HUGE plus). i feel like it would be more stable, powerfull, and trustworthy than the laptop. i'm also not the most DELICATE person, so it would be harder to drop a sawtooth vs. the powerbook, say, down a flight of stairs, or out of a moving vehichle.
so what do YOU think? looking at my pros and cons, and a little glimps of my personality and what i would be doing with the mac, which would be more fitting for me?
Hey,
I would say the sawtooth is the right choice here, as you need room to upgrade, and you can't really do that on a PB (you can upgrade, but not as much as a PM.)
But in order to make a right choice, you need to decide what are the must haves in order of importance to you. Is being small a must have for you? I see that is the only advantage you listed that the PB has over the PM in your case, but that depends on what kind of PB you are planning to get.

If you don't need the portability you can actually keep the amount of desk space the computer consumes really small.
The first thing you are going to need is a mini usb keyboard. There have been a few made with a Mac key layout, but I personally use one that I bought at a local pc shop. It was $15, and I love it! It's really just a pc style laptop keyboard put in a desktop case. If you want smaller I have seen the same thing but with a small trackball built in.
The second is probably more obvious: flat panel.
Those two combined will get your desk space requirements way down, possibly less than a laptop and definatly more flexible. It will probably cost less too! of course the two drawbacks are related to portability and under desk space, but the second one can be fixed with a little creativity.
Yep, my whole mini & 19" LCD & kb/mouse setup takes up less space than just the 21" CRT I used to use...
