Not sure if I put this in the right category. Whatever. Anyway, I want to buy a Powerbook, which is discontinued. So my only option is refurb or used, I would prefer refurb from apple with the 1 yr warranty and all that. Has anyone bought anything from the Apple online store refurbished? what did you think of it? Also- I don't go to my apple store in town very often (It is a major pain in the ass to get to- in the middle of a really congested area), and I can't remember if they sell refurbished stuff in the apple store.

refurbished Mac?
never had a problem with the refurb stuff, i honestly think they just convert old stock into "refurb" anyway.
... and nary a problem. Ever. If you're not into living on the bleeding edge, Apple refurbs are definitely the way to go.
I bought a refurb-eMac from a UK-authorised reseller that's pretty much the first port of call (aside from Apple) when you want to buy a mac in th e UK (it's called Cancom).
It's worked fine on the whole but there have been a few little things that have freaked me out:
The start-up chime doesn't always sound, which isn't a problem to me - it's just wierd. Secondly after 13 months, the combo drive decided it only liked to burn certain brands of CDs and struggles to reads DVDs (tried to install Tiger and it just wouldn't). I also get a funny colour change in the screen on the right side - don't know whether this is to do with mobile phones or other electrical equiptment? It hasn't domne this for a while so maybe it was just one of those things.
On that score, I got about £200 off a new one (it was when the eMac was upgraded from 1.25ghz to 1.42ghz) so it's worked out fine and needed no extra cash spending on it.
However, my employer buys all its macs as refurbs (from G5s through to iMacs) and we've had no end of trouble. We bought three mac minis the other day and two of them have had to be sent back with pooped logic boards. Also, the G5s we've bought have been playing up; being very slow, the drives have been dodgy (HD and CD drives) and certain software has been acting flaky (P'shop and Quark).
On that I'd say just make sure you use your warranty to full effect if you do happen to get a 'bad' machine.
Mind you, you could buy a mac new and it copuld be dodgy... after all, a 'refurb' mac was once 'new' wasn't it?
Hope you make a good purchase.
