which G3? Beige of Blue&White?
If it's a beige, does it have the "Wings" card? where it has RCA A/V inputs and out, along with S-Video?
We need a bit more info on this before I can help you...
sorry i didn't know there was a beige one
yea there is a Beige G3 and some of them came with a audio video (Wings) personality card which has RCA video and s-video in and out and RCA audio left and right in and out
the B&W G3 didn't have such a card for it that is why he asked you if it was a Beige G3 or a B&W cause if it was a Beige G3 you could have been able to hook the VCR up to it threw the RCA cables (which is the cable you described) if the Beige G3 had the wings personality card , if it didnt you could buy one off ebay for cheap.
the personality card will not work in a B&W G3 Mac cause there is no slots for it. i think there is a capture card tho so you can hook the vcr up to a device and the device hooks up to the computer. but i dont know much about them
If, by chance, you are still using only any of the Mac OS between 8.6 and 9.2.2, then a very nice, and now cheap on eBay way to go is to replace your video card with a ATI XClaim VR 128 video card and hook it up to an XClaim TV tuner box. These days you can sometimes find the set--video card and box--finally selling for about $20-30 on eBay. You can hook up the VCR using RCA cables to the TV tuner box. The software is nice and is downloadable from ATI. There's also a USB version of the XClaim TV which doesn't need the VR card, I believe, and it is also only 8.6-9 compatible. I don't know if it has RCA connectors or not.
There's also a small USB device by XLR8--I can't remember the name of it, but it has very limited resolutions so your viewing window will be very small.
With OS X the choices get more pricey. There's the Formac Studio box which hooks up to your firewire port and has all the different kinds of input connectors which retails for $300 or something like that, but they sell for $100-200 on eBay. I've got one of those and it works great using a third party software called Vidi which is free online.
And then there's the Elgato EyeTV which is supposed to be much better, but which sells for more. There are other devices out there too, but I can remember the others since their reputations seem to be sketchy. I can't think of any capture PCI cards offhand. I know there's a couple, but they usually are only OS 9 compatible, or if they can do OS X, they usually can't keep up with the later versions of OS X.
