Sawtooth Processor Upgrade

Well, I upgraded the original 350 MHZ AGP processor in my Sawtooth to a 500MHZ unit and that was fine for a while...
My question, IS there any Apple AGP processor that would be simple to install.
I really can't afford a full blown GIGA or such.
Hoping for a 800 MHZ or so from a Quicksilver or MDD or ??? that would be relatively painless to swap in.
Any info / ideas appreciated.
Thanks,
David

Anything up to the MDD will w

Anything up to the MDD will work. MDDs won't. IIRC, the quciksilver CPUs need to have some sort of extra power running to them.

I'm not sure what has to be d

I'm not sure what has to be done with the Quicksilver processor, but I'd say go with the Quicksilver. you can rbably get the best specs with that.

Cool

I see several Quicksilver processers on ebay/ with the heatsink.
Pehaps somebody here has one leftover from an upgrade.
Hopefully somebody will chime in with the mod needed.
I'll keep looking till then...

im so lazy...

ive been saying that i would do this write up for the better part of a year.... i swear... ill do it in the next day or two.

/Bill

Basically, you have to move the resistors on the cpu to adjust the bus speed and processor multiplier.

Thanks Bill

I figured it involved something like that...
I don't know that my eyes or hands can handle moving surface mount resistors anymore.
But, I would appreciate the info.
Thanks much !
Dave

How about if I purchase the processor and you use it showing the correct steps for moving the resistors...haha.
Thanks again and looking forward to the write up !!

I hope it works...

I bit the bullet and just purchased the OWC Mercury Extreme G4@1.2GHz with 2MB L3 Cache.
A bit more than I wanted to spend but didn't see any GREAT deals on a used G4 AGP processor, and then trying to make it work...
Thanks to all who helped here.

me too

Yeah, I'll probably be buying a 1.2Ghz Mercury Extreme soon for my wife's DA G4. The price/performance ratio seems best with that one. People pay too much for processors on eBay. For 20% more, usually, they could buy a brand new one with a warranty and support--how ridiculous to be paying 80% of the retail price for a used take-your-chancer. Happens every hour on eBay. The only deals on decent processors are when you're lucky enough to catch a newly listed buy-it-now that's priced low, and you could waste quite a lot of time trying to be vigilant for one of those.

old school

True, I am old school which taught me if you can not at least double your processor speed
an upgrade is not worth it.
I'll post back with my results when it arrives.

the nice part about the mercu

the nice part about the mercury extreme is the fact that they clock down faster processors. the 1.2 ghz is actually a 1.4 ghz g4... I've had the 1.2 merc extreme for about a year and a half now, and it's been chugging along at 1.4 for about 6 mos. now (since the warranty expired)...

Thanks for the info,
I am always uncomfortable when I plop down a few hundred $$$, while I'll be on bread and water for the next few months.
Well not quite that bad but you get the idea.
Thanks for the positive review.
