repairing Pismo scratch and marks

G'day
I got myself a nice little Pismo powerbook from ebay. However, it came with lots of marks and scratches on its cover, even though the powerbook itself is in good condition and lcd is w/o any damage or fault.
I was hoping to get some tips/suggestions on how to fix these marks/scratches etc... on the powerbook itself. The first thing came to my mind was to paint the whole thing. I remember reading this on the web a while ago, if I remember correctly, it was completely stripped and its cover separated from rest of the body then painted over (red!!) which made it look pretty spanky new!
Would that be a sound way to go about this? if so, how can I get it to strip and what type/paint is used?

cheers
