Rev. A (or maybe B?) iMac power problem...

I haven't had to troubleshoot a dead iMac in oh, about 6 years, so I'm a little rusty. Anyway, I gave my niece a tray-loading iMac 233 (grape, so I think that makes it a Rev. B?) a few years back and it's been working fine until about a month ago. Right now, it's in a state where the "guts" power on, but right when the display would come on, it cuts out completely. So, I get the startup chime, then a second or two later, it dies. I think this is basically a power supply problem, but I can't recall what the actual "name" of the power supply is for this model. I'm thinking "A/V Board" or "Analog Board", something like that. Any ideas??

Thanks,
-Chad

Flyback transformer...

I just had this happen with a 266MHz - it seems like a classic symptom of the flyback transformer on the analog board. Disconnect the internal video cable, and if the iMac boots up, then that will confirm the problem.

I just pulled the logic board tray, mass storage chassis, and power supply board from the iMac and put it in an old PC case. Works fine.

Unfortunately, that's not a g

Unfortunately, that's not a great option. I gave her this iMac because she needed something compact to fit on a very small desk in a very cramped room (teenagers just accumulate too much junk!)

I'll try disconnecting the display to see if that allows it to complete the startup process. If so, I'll go hunting for a transformer. Otherwise, I'll just have to find her another not-so-ancient iMac.
