Help... im at my wits end with this one. My G4 is, at random intervals, and for no readily apperent reason, making a 'ding donnnng noise... Sounds like a doorbell, or the doors closing chime on NYC subway cars. There are no apps running when this happens, and
AGH! it just did it again!
.. anywhoo... and i cannot pin down what's causing it. It is happening at random times, and random intervals.
Any ideas?
system software? apps?
It's happened when i've had nothing running. No apps, no odd 3rd party widgets, no nothing (except the finder, of course). I don't have any reminders set in iCal, i don't have any alarms set or anything. There are no apps or processes running that should cause my computer to do this. I cannot come up with any explanation for it. I've even gone thru my desk drawers and looked for any sort of device that could be making the sound (although i am SURE it's coming from my computer's speakers).
Are you sure you don't have a chat program running in the background?
Check Activity Monitor in Utilities to see what's running.
I think i've got it... Im fairly sure it was OpdiControl (a background process that controls a CD archival device) informing me (in it's own obscure way) that it was loosing contact with the device. Unplugging/re-plugging the USB cable seems to have stopped it.
There are several contact failure errors in it's error log, and they seem to coincide with when i was hearing the noise.
