Gotta figger'out what to take along and what to stow away . . . I think the best move I ever made was specializing in Duo Hacking. They're SO SMALL and even their PCMCIA equipped NuBus kin stack SOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!! much more compactly that half a cord of IIfx boxen!

Nabbing a digital Olympus XA last Friday evening didn't hurt any either. I've sorta been snappin'n PACKIN' along with the hackin' . . . :cry:
A lot of this stuff has been underway for a while or it's been waiting for goodies to arrive . . . or for the filmstrip show in the old noggin' to take a break. The 5300c/CD sorta just happened a couple of months ago while I was setting up Beater, the CD in my hands just sorta jumped into the 190 sitting there with the 1400 .pdf up on the LCD. I'd made the mistake of posting about a 190CD hack right after reading that the 3400 was a CD upgraded 5300 . . . without doin' my homework. Everybody said it couldn’t be done . . . so the hack just sorta happened of its own. I didn't actually turn the toothsome trio loose until last week, but . . .

I gave Ryoba some R&R, I need to get a new blade. Dozuki got a real workout though. See the pics of the .jp "backsaw" in that gallery? That's Dozuki Noko, they don't come any finer than that hot lil' number, 240 mm of the nastiest mother of all X-ACTO#34 Razor Saws! But with a straight draw and about a 40-55 mm angled depth of cut. I finally realized why that #34 fine razor has been my favorite since I was a kid, it's a thin bladed, .jp pattern pull-saw! Its a micro Dozuki Noko! Its big brother, the #35, is an English/American pattern push-saw with a thicker blade and reinforced "back" that makes it a sort of mini-gent’s saw. That one's "all rusty" (not very, really) from sitting around unused while #34 is like new and still sharp after about 40 years of sporadic use.
I make a lot of fun of the Dremel Tool, but machining has its place, just not for more than about a quarter or maybe half of what they seem to get used for in hacks I've seen online. Check out the way Dozuki Noko split that center divider STRAIGHT down the middle, I'll need to set it into the bottom plate with a battery and hot glue . . . or maybe cast the whole bottom shell in paraffin for the router/template cuts on the final hack in order to get it that clean! The corner with the disappearing feets trick up its sleeve (pantleg?) will probably be set in epoxy in advance of the router passes for the same reason.
These things will be decent hacks in their own right, but they're really design studies, sorta like the plaster casts a sculptor does before going to bronze, except these are full scale. The MK I bottom plate will wind up with some new duds, plexi or maybe aluminum * diamondpla . . . =8-O *
. . . whatever, I get a little carried away . . . erm . . . I take the "cult of craftsmanship" a little too far over the top sometimes, just like I try to turn craftsmanship into production methods alla' time.

p.s. forgot to mention that that little hole in the side where the parts don’t seem to come together will wind up the purtiest rectangular ROM access LED window you’ve ever seen! That’s where the feets button was and the covers won’t fit.

This one is fascinating! I'm waiting with bated breath to see where you go with this. If you can get an apdater board working to hook up the CD-ROM to the motherboard, then hooo-boy, will I be excited!
I've thought about junking a 5300 Zip drive to get a look at the IDE interface, but I haven't come across a *free* one yet... And according to Dan K, the Zip for the Wallstreet (same interface design) is wacky and not really hackable for anything useful...
Maybe a Wallstreet LS-120 or something will give us a hackable interface board for other IDE devices?
Anyway, if a 3400's CD-ROM will fit, then this hack has some real legs!

You've already proven that the 3400's CD interface card works in the 5300, that's why I bought one. Having the actual 3400 drive chassis fit in there will just be icing on the cake if I go that way with the hack. I've lopped off the 3400 CD's interface card to match the width of the 5300 mobo and I'm sure I could take a lot more off without hitting any traces. So far I've found (presumably) power plane(s) sandwiched by ground planes. I never bothered to buz them because at the cut . . .
. . . they're SOLID-FULL-WIDTH-COPPER!

The PCB layout guy woulda had to have had a freakin' death wish to move any traces out to the extension his boss told him slap onto a proven 5300 (generic) layout. He only had to widen it to fit the new 3400 module's physical spec. Take a look at the evenly spaced grid of sealed thru holes he musta' done out of sheer boredom!
I'm too busy packing, so you've just been delegated, it's time to put your hardware on the line! Lop off your 3400 adapter to match the 5300 mobo edge, file it clean, polish the edge, wet it and examine at high magnification. The best loupe I have out is only 8x, bog only knows where the 20x is stowed!
If your interface PCB exhibits the same clean bill of health as mine, test it like in the piccie again, but this time leave it stripped down to . . .
. . . its knickers and take some post card shots! :ebc:
If it takes more tha an hour to Google up a generic flex cable extension for an ATAPI ROM mechanism for offsetting the con . . .

The amputation described above does not seem to have affected function of the 3400's CD adapter card .It fits right into the 5300c/CD MK II, I'll post a pic of it in sitting in there later to visually document the amount (a smidgen less than half the cable width) of offset required. It's only an IDE interface cable, so it shouldn't be a problem to hotwire. A single angled ribbon cable pass around the adapter card will do if a stock extension isn't readily available.
I've got some LCD anomolies to clear up. I'll post a new thread for that and cross-link it with this thread and the 190cs/CD thread, as it's a more general interest 5300 inquiry than a hacks matter.

This shot in particular shows how the adapter cable can continue in a spiral around the adapter to make one full turn on an angle in order to mate with the offset Flex Cable connector.

If an extension is a problem to find or expensive, desoldering the connector and hardwiring with ribbon cable shouldn't be all that difficult. Does anyone know of a standard flex cable jumper or adapter card that'll that turn this contact config into a standardized mini IDE header with the extra three CD signal lines on the end? The configuration of the 1400's adapter looks like it may be used elsewhere in the Apple line or in general use.
