Soldering a mass of tiny wires...eeek!!!

Hi All,

The ribbon cable in my Palm Tungsten T2 broke! EEK! No wonder the slider kept causing the screen to die!

Anyway, a connector has been ripped from the ribbon cable. Its impossible to fix as the tiny tracks have gone.

Im trying to source a new cable, but not have much luck. Here is a low res pic:

(Look for orange cable)

High res pic:

Anyway, my question is...would it be feasable to solder on numerous tiny smt repair wires to make a perminant cable and hense fix the pda?

Thanks

T

Yikes!

Solder? I doubt it. Chances are that the solder would bridge between the wires on the thing and cause all kinds of havoc. You'd be better off trying to find a replacement ribbon; do the two ends plug into a connector of some kind on the circuit boards, or how are they attached?

Well I did an experiment on a

Well I did an experiment on an old (dead) palm board, and even with the help of a microscope it took around 10 mins to solder just one wire without bridges! No way am I going to try on the real machine, even if it is possible (which I dont think it is!!)

Thanks for the advice Dave, I agree its to risky / hard.

Yes, the ribbon clips onto a connector on the board. I just need to find another cable....

I've seen a rework tech solde

I've seen a rework tech solder wire wrap wire on top of the trace paths on kapton ribbon cables in order to repair them. It was really amazing. Way beyond my soldering ability (which means it's really freakin' hard)
