I have a beige Power mac 8600 with a Sonnet Upgrade Card to 500MHz. The OS is 9.1. I printed something from word and after my computer restarted the OS loads up programs won't run and I can't open up the hard drive or documents folder. I am able to run programs off of my firewire hard drive. I know that I could format the hard drive and reinstall OS 9 but is there anything else that I could do. Please help me. :?

First thing that comes to mind...
Restart the Mac.
1) As soon as you hear the startup chime, hold down Apple, option, p, r, until the computer restarts again and you hear another startup chime.
2) Once it restarts and you see the gray screen, hold down just option and command until the desktop appears. You should get a box asking if you want to rebuild the desktop. Click yes.
The first resets the parameter ram - presets like selected startup drive, time, and a number of other settings.
The second rebuilds the desktop files, which I think is the first place that should be looked at for this problem. I seem to recall something similar happening to me years ago and this fixed it.
If you can get to your system folder, there's a little extension called 'total desktop rebuild' you can install that will actually erase the desktop file on startup, causing it to be recreated from scratch, rather than the normal Apple rebuild in which corruption can occasionally remain.
Let us know if that works!
I just wanted to thank you. What you said to do worked on the first try and was a lot easier than reformatting. You sound like you know quite a bit about macs could you possibly how much my computer is worth if I was to sell it???
