diskutil repair/verify - what's the difference?

It looks like both do the exact same thing... you hit repair, and if something has permissions needing repaired, they get repaired...

you hit verify, and if something has permissions needing repaired, they get repaired...

Is there a difference?

repair / verify

To me, it looks like "verify" only looks for problems and lists them (if any found), whereas "repair" already tries to repair any spotted errors. So the only visible difference I can see is that one only verifies and the other one verifies and repairs...

..but it could be more than that!

verify repairs, too!

definately not, though that's what one might expect from the name.
Try it... verify will always repair screwed up permissions when it finds them.

douh!

yes, seems you are right... can't remember that well, but wasn't that a bit different back in the days of the first os x versions???

at least it seems that "verify" checks what permissions are set in the original files, located in "library/receipts", to see if they differ.
