Replacing LCD in a Clamshell

Hi everyone,

I recently got an M6411 iBook (Blueberry Clamshell, 366 G3) for free from work because of a single horizontal line running across the LCD screen. It had been dropped, but that seems to be the only thing wrong with the laptop. There's something loose rattling inside as well, but I'm figuring it's just a bit of plastic.

I've done a lot of computer work on desktop PC's, but never a laptop. I'm wondering if replacing the LCD would be something worth undertaking. I'm not sure where to buy a replacement. How do I go about finding a good replacement? Where should I buy from? Does anyone have any links to the specifics on the type of LCD in this computer?

I would certainly appreciate any leads or hints. Once I get pointed in the right direction, I shouldn't have any problems.

Thanks!

eBay is probably your best be

eBay is probably your best bet for something like this. Try and find a machine with a good screen to cannibalize. Although, if it's been dropped, there may just be a few loose connections inside. I would take the iBook apart and reseat all the cables/connections and see where that leaves me before investing in a new screen.

Cheers,

Same LCD?

I'll keep an eye on eBay then, thanks.

Hopefully I can match the model number, but if another clamshell iBook comes up (like the 300 G3), would the chance of them having the same type of LCD pretty good?

12.1" TFT LCDs - eg: LTN121S, LP121S, etc.

Search for LCDs on eBay (ltn121s*,lp121s*) , most that turn up will work. Ensure the data connector of anything you buy is located in the same spot as that of the original LCD, some are located in different places. Prices for working bare SVGA LCDs vary from $20 to $120, most seem to sell around $50-$60.

All clamshell iBooks' LCDs are interchangable, but while buying a pukka iBook LCD will assure you of absolute compatibility, buying a one from a generic PC laptop will cost less and will work just as well.
