Problems with airport extreme?

i keep having problems with the weak signal from my airport base station. I have it set to go a long distance (i.e.: Strong signal strenght) but the problem is that in my room on the second floor (my AP Base Station is in the basement) My signal keeps dropping out. That combined with my iBook's already bad reception, and the really bad linksys Wireless card in my desktop, It's dang-near impossible to keep on the net. I don't know what else to do. I don't want to pay linksys for their proprietary antennae (dam them) which runs $40 USD. I also don't think i can build one. is there any idea as to how to enhance the signal strength w/o have to buy expensive stuff just to do it. Also, why does the reception in the new G4 iBooks suck? you would think that since it is built buch like the G3 Dual USB, it would have the same reception. Did apple purposely drop the power in the APE that much that it now has horrible reception?
Anyone had any luck with this stuff?

i just saw the Aiport submarining topic

but mine is that i am trying to figure out how to deal on the peripheral end rather than the Base station end. More of how to get the linksys to work with it better, not replace the base station since that is not an option. My parents own the base, and i cannot put another wireless router on the network

Move the base station.

You can't move the base station upstairs? They really aren't made to go multi-floor. The signal looks like a big doughnut with the base in the middle. It you are above it you won't see it that well.

i really can't move it

b/c the cable modem is fixed to the wall in the basement. my dad decided to put it down there, and i can't convince him to move it. Is there a way that i can take the antennae from the screen around my iBook and use something to enhance it (i.e.: adding a signal amplifier?

Cat-5 to the rescue...

Couldn't you run a Cat-5 cable up from the basement and have the base station on that rather than beside the router?
