airport+modem+old mac

ok so i have an airport extreme base station with the modem.
I was wondering if i could hook it up to a telephone line and then access the network it is connected to by dialing into it from another computer over PPP
Is there any chance this could work?
or some other way to use an old mac with a modem to dial into a newer network?
And can something dial into another computer on the same line? or would the numbers have to be different?
any help please

I wasn't really sure where to post this.

What exactly are you trying t

What exactly are you trying to get to network together? An old Mac could be anything from a 128k to a B&W G3, depending on your definition of 'old.' Smile Most Macs from the Plus on up at least had SCSI, so they can make use of a SCCSI-Ethernet bridge. If not, there are other options ddepending highly on what particular Macs you are working with.

well i was thinking of either

well i was thinking of either a newer 68k or older powermac
possibly a duo230

i was thinking it would be easier and cheaper to go over ppp than try to setup a scsi-ethernet or internet ethernet and tcp/ip
im not very familiar with networking on older macs

What are you hooking it into?

What are you hooking it into? And what do you want to transfer? Are you trying to get internet access on the lower end machine, or just transfer files? If it's file transfer, then you can do a LocalTalk setup for really cheap, and it will be way faster than trying to get dialup going between local machines. LocalTalk is about 230-290K, but I don't remember for sure. Even a SCSI-Ethernet bridge might be a bit harder to setup, but it will be significantly faster than trying to do dialup, for file transfers. If all you want is internet access then there are other options to work out. Agian it all depends on what is hooking to what and what you want ot do with it. If your old 68k Duo 230 only has a Printer/LocalTalk port and the Dock port, you'll need a SCSI mini-dock at least to use a SCSI Ethernet. If you have a newer Mac that is still old enough to have LocalTalk capable serial ports, then that might be your best bet.
