iBook problems...

Well this was well timed... the week after my warranty ran out my iBook starts playing up ::)

Basically the computer is switching off and loosing it's date and time whenever the screen is moved to it's extremes (right back and nearly closed), which is really annoying. When the screen is in an upright position the computer works fine, so I suspect it's nothing too serious, but it's fairly annoying having to shut down the computer every time I want to close the lid!

Any ideas on a fix guys?

Update...

Just tried to switch it on and the backlight won't come on... so looks like it's the inverter or display cable. Could it be anything else? Can I fix this myself? Or how much is it going to cost me?

Two parts that cause this

It sounds like either your reed switch/inverter cable, or your lvds cable have failed. Assuming this is an iBook G4, the reed switch/inverter cable is a really straigtforward repair, and not a terribly expensive part from your local Apple dealer. If you need further help, e-mail or IM me. My e-mail and iChat id is iantm@mac.com

Wouldn't the LVDS cable failing cause the whole screen to die rather than just the backlight? If so then it's more likely the inverter cable... hopefully it's something that simple! Oh and it is a iBook G4.

iBook G4

Given your symptom description, I'd say that this sounds to be a bad reed switch/inverter cable, which isn't a terribly expensive part. On the iBook G4, it's pretty straightforward. I wouldn't call it an easy repair, but it isn't really that difficult. It's more tedious than anything else.

Yeah, I was speaking to the Mac technician at school today and he's said that was likely the problem. He also said he's had a few iBooks in with similar symptoms, and it was that cable those times as well. OK... time to strip down the lappy and check Biggrin
