I'll preface this post by saying that I'm a mac newbie. I'm sure this is a fairly common question, so I apologize if I'm being redundant, but I didn't see anything in my searches that I found particularly relevant. I recently bought a gen 2 ibook off of ebay with 192mb of ram and os 9.2 installed. I was wondering if I can still add more ram in order to upgrade to os x; if I can add more ram, will I need to pull out the ram "card" that is already installed?. I read somewhere that the g4 ibook only had two slots for extra ram and so you could only add one "card" of ram, which is why I'm not sure if I can add more ram to this computer. Thank you all so much for the help.

First, I'd like to start by welcoming you to the wonderful world of the Mac and Applefritter. Your iBook, assuming it has a dvd drive, is capable of running every mac os up to tiger. If it's a gen 2, it's probably a safe bet that you have firewire and a 366 mhz processor. (assuming that this is NOT a feb 2000 iBook SE).
You can throw up to a 512mb PC66/100/133 SO-DIMM in there with nary a problem. You will need to pull the 128mb SO-DIMM that's already in there though. As for the g4 iBook having two slots, that sadly isn't the case. PowerBooks traditionally have two ram slots, except for the 12 inch G4 PowerBook which shares a lot with the iBooks, which as consumer machines are slightly pared down and only have one ram slot.

If by clamshell, you mean one of the colored ones (bondi, blueberry, tangerine, or graphite) then you only have one RAM slot. You can find this by lifting the keyboard up. The machine has 32MB on the mobo already. The most you can do is drop in a 256 chip (unless a 512 is made for this size and I have never heard of such an animal. These do not have firewire (unless it is on the Grahpite and I forgot).
If by clamhell, you mean one of the white/ice/snow ones or newer than the above is dead on.
By clamshell I mean an indigo 366mzh with firewire, 10gb hard drive. In reply to the first response it only has a cd rom, not dvd. Sorry I wasn't specific enough. So, based on this information, how much ram could I add? Thanks.
Yes, they do make 512mb chips that will work on your machine. Look for a PC-100 or 133 SO-DIMM. Even though the machine used PC-66 at the time of it's release, those are expensive, and pc100 and 133 will downgrade to accomodate the machine. The pc100 and pc133 sodimms are pretty cheap and work well. In my family, we have three 1st gen clamshell iBooks (2 366mhz Graphites (feb 2000), 1 300mhz tangerine). They all have 512s and work fine addressing the memory. Of the clamshells, only the 300mhz models had 32mb onboard, all other clamshells have 64mb onboard.

Thank you so much for your help, especially that I can use a cheaper card to upgrade. I looked up the PC66's and was really worried about the costs.
