USB Zip Drive - Bus power?

I have a USB Zip Drive which works fine, but i wondered if it was possible to run it off of the Bus Power, there is a power connector right next to the USB connector and i was thinking if i add a diode and a fuse it might power the drive? The Huge power brick is the only thing stopping me using it with my iBook.

cheers

Power Requirement

It seems USB will not give it the 1 Amp it needs to operate, so i'll probably have to get a battery pack to run it on the move. Or buy a newer bus-powered model.

what about..

how much current does FireWire ports give out. I know that you can put HD's on them. I also know that there are portable CD-RW's/DVD+-RW's that you can have bus powered. I am thinking that these draw the same current as a zip drive...
Am I wrong?

when you find yourself in the company of a halfling and an ill-tempered dragon, remember, you do not have to outrun the dragon...
